You can decorate a toilet paper roll fall tree with autumn-colored paint and apply it using cotton swabs, fingers, a sponge, a cotton ball, or a piece of paper towel. For a separate canopy, use cardstock or lightweight cardboard; optional finishing touches include real leaves, sequins, stickers, pom-poms, markers, and googly eyes. The right materials depend on whether you want a standing tree or a flat stamped picture.
Materials for a paint-dot tree
For a simple freestanding tree, shape the cardboard tube itself into a trunk and canopy, then dab on autumn leaves. Acrylic Painting School’s instructions list:
- A toilet paper roll
- A pencil and scissors
- Green, yellow, red, and orange paint
- Cotton swabs, plus a paintbrush
- A paper plate or palette for the paint
Cotton swabs make small dots, but they are not essential: the instructions also suggest fingers, a sponge, or paper towel for dabbing. See Acrylic Painting School’s autumn toilet-paper-roll tree.
Materials for a separate paper or cardboard canopy
Instead of shaping the tube into the whole tree, make the top separately and attach it or fit it into slits cut in the tube. These approaches need a canopy material as well as the roll.

Fingerprint canopy
For a painted canopy that slots into the tube, use lightweight cardboard, scissors, a toilet paper roll, and red, orange, yellow, brown, and green paint. A cereal box can provide the cardboard. Cut two slits in one end of the roll, let the painted canopy dry, then slide it into the slits. The All Kids Network fingerprint fall tree instructions also include a printable template.
Marbled cardstock canopy
For a marbled finish, gather white cardstock, shaving cream, food coloring, a cotton swab, and a rubber spatula. After making the print, set it aside to dry for 30 minutes, cut out the tree-top shape, and attach it to the tube. Kids Activity Zone lists hot glue or craft glue for attachment, and glue dots or double-sided tape as alternatives to hot glue.

If you would rather skip the shaving-cream print, the same tutorial suggests dabbing acrylic paint onto the canopy with a cotton ball. A different slotted-canopy variation uses a toilet paper roll, green construction paper, fall-colored cereal, scissors, glue, and a marker. Decorate the cut paper tree top with cereal, let it dry, then fit it into slits in the tube. This is one variation, not a requirement for the other methods; the All Kids Network paper-roll fall tree craft notes that cereal should not be eaten after glue has been applied.

Materials for a flat stamped tree picture
If the project does not need to stand, use a paper plate, paint, paper or cardstock, a toilet paper or paper towel roll, scissors, glue, and brown construction paper. Glue a paper trunk to a page, dip the end of the cardboard tube in paint, and stamp around the trunk to make leaves. This method creates a flat picture rather than a freestanding sculpture. The instructions describe different processes, but they do not provide controlled comparisons of time, cost, or cleanup, so those factors are not established as advantages of one method over another.

Child-friendly setup and glue choices
- An adult can cut the tube or canopy shapes ahead of time for young children.
- Hot glue should be handled by an adult. Craft glue is an alternative listed for attaching the marbled canopy.
- For the cereal variation, do not eat the cereal after glue has been applied.
