In a July 2022 staff Q&A, Mark Zuckerberg said Meta would raise performance expectations and that employees who felt the company was no longer right for them could choose to leave. He was quoted as saying, “Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here.” The remarks signaled a tougher performance climate; the report did not say he announced a specific layoff plan.

What Zuckerberg said to Meta employees

Futurism reported on July 1, 2022, that Zuckerberg made the comments during a Q&A with Meta staff. The article said Reuters had obtained recordings of the session; this account is based on Futurism’s reporting, not an independently reviewed recording or complete transcript.

Alongside the widely repeated line about people who “shouldn’t be here,” Zuckerberg was quoted as saying, “some of you might decide that this place isn’t for you, and that self-selection is OK with me.” In context, he was describing higher expectations and increased pressure, with the possibility that some employees would decide to leave on their own.

Why he raised performance expectations

The report placed the comments against economic headwinds and Meta’s push to operate with leaner teams. It also cited a memo from chief product officer Chris Cox calling for the company to “prioritize more ruthlessly” and to build “leaner, meaner, and better executing teams.” Those are short phrases reported from Cox’s memo, not a complete sentence reproduced from it.

Zuckerberg also characterized the outlook in the Q&A by saying, “If I had to bet, I’d say that this might be one of the worst downturns that we’ve seen in recent history.” That was his assessment in the reported meeting, not a quantified economic finding or an independently established ranking.

Did Zuckerberg announce layoffs?

Not according to the cited report: it describes tougher performance expectations and the possibility of employees self-selecting out, but does not establish that Zuckerberg announced a specific layoff plan during the Q&A. It gives no number of employees targeted. The distinction matters: comments about performance pressure should not be presented as a confirmed headcount-cut announcement.

How to understand the 2022 report today

The remarks belong to a July 2022 account of a staff meeting. The article’s references to economic slowdown, Meta’s metaverse efforts, and hiring or employment cuts elsewhere in technology describe that period; they do not establish Meta’s current conditions or policy. Nor does the report show what happened to any particular employee.
