Mark Zuckerberg did not literally pledge to fill Facebook with “AI slop.” On Meta’s October 30, 2024, third-quarter earnings call, he described a possible new category of feed content: material generated by AI, summarized by AI, or assembled from existing content with AI. He said Meta was testing approaches and that some looked promising, while acknowledging the company did not yet know what would work best.
What Zuckerberg said about AI content in Facebook feeds
On Meta’s Q3 2024 earnings call, Zuckerberg said: “I think we’re going to add a whole new category of content, which is AI generated or AI summarized content, or existing content pulled together by AI in some way.” He added: “I don’t know if we know what’s exactly going to work really well yet, but some things are really promising.” Fortune’s October 30, 2024 report covered the remarks.
That is a forecast about a possible direction for the feed, not a quantified promise to make all or most Facebook posts AI-generated. “AI slop” is a critical label used in the headline and in commentary; it was not Zuckerberg’s wording in the quoted remarks. 404 Media’s October 31, 2024 coverage placed the comments in the context of Facebook’s shift from friends’ updates toward creator and recommended content.

On September 25, 2024, Meta said it was testing AI-generated content in Facebook and Instagram feeds. Its examples included images created for people based on their interests or current trends, with prompts inviting them to take the content in a new direction. That announcement establishes that Meta said a test existed at the time; it does not establish a universal rollout, how widely it ran, or whether it remains active in particular places. Meta’s September 2024 announcement describes the test.

The proposed category also covers more than newly generated images. Zuckerberg included AI summaries and existing material brought together by AI. Those are distinct ways AI might shape a feed, and the remarks did not specify a final product design or how prominently each type would appear.
What the advertising figures do—and do not—show
Meta’s generative-AI advertising tools are separate from ordinary organic feed content. In September 2024, Meta said more than 1 million advertisers had used its tools to create 15 million ads in the preceding month. Meta also reported average click-through rates 11% higher and conversion rates 7.6% higher for campaigns using its generative-AI ad features compared with campaigns that did not. These are company-reported advertising figures, not independent evaluations and not measurements of AI-generated posts in users’ feeds. Meta’s announcement provides the figures; 404 Media also reported executives describing more than 1 million businesses creating more than 15 million ads per month on the earnings call.

What Meta says about labels and safeguards
Meta’s June 2024 statement on UK election preparations said its Community Standards and Ad Standards apply to AI-generated content. The company described fact-checking and down-ranking content rated as altered, as well as labels for photorealistic AI images in specified circumstances. This is Meta’s description of its policy in the UK election context—not an independent audit of enforcement worldwide or evidence that the measures work consistently in every location. Meta’s UK election statement gives its account.
What is still unknown about AI content on Facebook
The cited announcements and reporting do not establish what proportion of Facebook or Instagram feeds currently consists of AI-generated content, whether the 2024 test continues in any specific geography, or what measurable effect it has had on user satisfaction, content quality, or time spent. They support the conclusion that Meta explored AI-shaped feed content and that Zuckerberg saw potential in it, but not a current prevalence estimate or a demonstrated outcome.

In an August 2026 essay, Zuckerberg later promoted widely distributed personal AI and discussed Meta’s positions on agents, open-source models, governance, and safety. That essay reflects subsequent company positioning; it does not establish how the 2024 feed test rolled out or affected users. Meta’s August 2026 essay describes that later vision.
