The corpse flower’s notorious stench comes from a mixture of chemicals, not a single “corpse flower” compound. A 2024 study highlighted putrescine, which gives the odor a rotting-meat character, and two sulfur compounds—dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide—that contribute a powerful smell. Researchers also observed the flower’s central spadix warming during bloom and proposed that the heat helps waft the odor outward.

Why does the corpse flower smell like rotting meat?

Amorphophallus titanum, commonly called the corpse flower or titan arum, uses a carrion-like odor in a pollination strategy associated with insects that visit dead animals. Carrion-seeking insects, especially carrion beetles, are the relevant pollinators described in a 2024 Chemistry World account of the study.

The odor is a chemical blend. The report identifies putrescine as providing a rotting-meat basis, alongside two sulfur-containing compounds that help make the smell especially pungent. Together, these cues can make the flower seem like a potential food or breeding site to insects seeking carrion.

Which chemicals make the corpse flower’s odor?

Putrescine

Putrescine is associated with the smell of decomposing flesh and gives the flower’s odor its characteristic rotting-meat quality. The account does not provide a measured concentration for this compound in the studied blooms.

Corpse Flower - World's Largest Flower - 8+ Feet Tall - 10 Seeds - Growing Instructions are Included
  • The Corpse Flower, also known as Amorphophallus titanum or titan arum, is the world’s largest unbranched inflorescence (cluster of flowers on a main stem). This cluster of flowers is wrapped in a tall green spathe, surrounded by a deep burgundy bloom resembling the color and texture of flesh. This, along with the pungent odor make it memorable.
  • Carnivorous Plant. These flowers usually take 7-10 years to bloom for the first time, and then can re-bloom every 3-5 years afterward, usually in the summer.
  • Best Grown in a Greenhouse or Inside in Pots. They eventually have a large corm underground. See the Product Details on this listing.
  • Soak the seed and press gently into damp soil until covered. Keep Moist. A plastic dome over the pot will keep it moist. These flowers are native to Sumatra and Borneo.
  • Marde Ross & Company has been a Licensed California Nursery since 1985.

Dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide

The study account also highlights dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide, sulfur compounds the flower produces from the sulfur-containing amino acid methionine. They contribute to the strong, far-reaching odor. The report does not give concentration measurements that would allow a comparison of how much each compound contributes.

Why does the corpse flower heat up?

The central spike-like structure, called the spadix, warmed by as much as 11°C just before and during the early bloom in the reported observations. The figure comes from the blooms discussed in the 2024 report; it should not be read as a universal temperature increase for every corpse flower.

Researchers proposed that this thermogenesis helps disperse the sulfur compounds and carry the scent farther, potentially increasing the chance that carrion-seeking insects encounter it. This is a functional explanation for the observed warming, not proof that heat alone determines whether insects are attracted.

How was the scent study conducted?

The 2024 study examined two blooms—in 2016 and 2022—of Morphy, a 21-year-old corpse flower grown in a Dartmouth College greenhouse. The report identifies the paper as A. Zulfiqar and colleagues’ study in PNAS Nexus, volume 3, article pgae492. Because the work covered two bloom events of one plant, it is not a survey of many plants or populations.

Does the smell change during the bloom?

The odor varies across bloom stages, which typically last a few days. Study lead Eric Schaller suggested that changes in scent could resemble different degrees of decay and might appeal to different insects. That is a proposed explanation, not a demonstrated mechanism.
