A batter suits No. 3 if they can handle an early entry and make good use of—or adapt to—the Powerplay; No. 4 if they can rebuild or accelerate through the middle overs; and No. 5 if they can respond to a disrupted innings and, when the team needs it, finish strongly. These are team-assigned jobs, not fixed player types: the right choice depends on likely entry situations, bowling matchups and the balance of the XI.
Why the batting number does not define the whole job
A No. 3 might walk in after an early wicket, while the field is still restricted, or much later if the openers have built a partnership. A No. 4 or No. 5 might inherit a strong platform, a collapse, a favorable matchup or a need to raise the scoring rate. The position sets expectations, but the situation determines the immediate task.
In a full 20-over men’s T20 international, the first six overs are the Powerplay: at the instant of delivery, no more than two fielders may be outside the restriction area. In non-Powerplay overs, up to five may be outside. Those field settings affect scoring options and risk, and shortened innings have adjusted Powerplay lengths under the ICC Men’s Twenty20 International Playing Conditions.

In an ICC report on India’s flexible batting approach, middle-order batter Tilak Varma emphasized situational awareness and clarity about the batting order. A team should agree on the likely entry scenarios and the options available in each, rather than expect a batter to follow one tempo regardless of circumstances.

What a No. 3 needs to do
No. 3 is the first middle-order batter, but may function like an additional opener if a wicket falls quickly. They need to assess whether the best response is to attack or stabilize, read the field and bowling options, and adjust as the innings moves from the Powerplay into the middle overs.
A specific matchup can justify promoting a particular player. Pakistan batter Salman Ali Agha explained his move to No. 3 by saying he expected to face spin and believed he could dominate it during the Powerplay. That example shows how a player’s skill against a bowling type can shape the role; it does not establish a universal No. 3 template. See the ICC report on Pakistan’s No. 3 choice.

What a No. 4 needs to do
No. 4 often bridges the opening phase and the later overs. Depending on when they arrive, they may need to rebuild after wickets, rotate strike while a partner attacks, or accelerate against pace or spin. The most useful quality is range: the ability to change scoring tempo without losing sight of the innings’ needs.

This is a practical description, not a rule every side follows. ICC coverage of India’s approach highlights flexibility and situational awareness, while a report on selection choices discusses the middle order in relation to specific team needs. Those examples reinforce that the role depends on the lineup around the batter, not just the number on the team sheet.

What a No. 5 needs to do
No. 5 may be assigned a finishing role, particularly when a team wants a strong late-innings hitter in that position. But a No. 5 can also arrive early after a collapse and have to repair the innings. A good fit can quickly assess the equation, choose an appropriate tempo and preserve ways to accelerate if the innings recovers.
Finishing is a distinct challenge. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting described the specialist task of arriving with only a few overs left and a substantial target still to score. ICC reporting has also described Dinesh Karthik as a designated finisher, illustrating how a team may assign that responsibility to a particular player. Neither example means every No. 5 must be a finisher.

How to compare candidates for the role
Compare players in the situations the team actually expects, rather than assuming a position has one standard job. Useful questions include:
- Entry timing: Can the batter settle quickly if a wicket falls in the Powerplay, and adapt if they enter after the field spreads?
- Bowling matchups: Can they score against the pace and spin options likely to face them in this game?
- Scoring range: Can they rotate strike and find boundaries against different field settings?
- Recovery after wickets: Can they rebuild without losing the ability to accelerate later?
- Late-innings execution: If finishing is part of the job, can they score quickly with fewer overs remaining and manage the target or chase equation?
- Team balance: Does the batter add a needed skill, rather than duplicate one the other players already provide?
When reviewing performance, look for comparable entry points, bowling types and match situations. An average or strike rate on its own cannot show when a player batted or what the team needed. The sources available do not establish a universal scorecard for choosing among positions 3, 4 and 5.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—show
A 2024 peer-reviewed study examined movement and heart-rate responses during T20 batting among 83 young male Indian cricketers. It grouped participants as 36 upper-order, 35 middle-order and 12 lower-order batters. These broad groups are not separate No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 cohorts, so the findings cannot establish a universal physical profile for any one of those positions or be generalized without qualification. Read the study, Physical Characteristics, Movement Pattern, and Heart Rate Response of Indian Cricketers During Batting in Twenty20 (T20) Matches.
The available sources do not provide a directly comparable set of position-by-position statistics tied to entry situation, opposition bowling and match context. Broad workload findings should not be treated as proof of a specific batting skill, and positional averages alone would not settle role fit.
