A fashion brand is not luxury simply because it charges more or limits how many people can buy its products. It earns that position when quality and craftsmanship are joined by distinctive design and meaning, a price customers can justify against the value they perceive, deliberate access, and an experience that makes customers feel recognized. These elements work together; none is a reliable shortcut on its own.
What makes a fashion brand feel like luxury?
Luxury is a combination of product substance and customer meaning. Materials, construction, and finish establish whether a product meets expectations. Design identity and brand story help explain why it is desirable beyond its practical use. Price, distribution, and service shape how customers encounter and interpret that offer.
Recent industry research suggests that the balance is changing. McKinsey’s June 2026 report, based on more than 2,000 luxury clients surveyed in the United States and China, describes quality and craftsmanship as a “price of entry” in both markets. Emotional connection ranked among the leading drivers of desirability there, ahead of traditional markers such as heritage and exclusivity. Those findings are specific to the surveyed markets, not a universal formula. McKinsey, June 2026

| Dimension | What it contributes | What it cannot prove by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Quality and craftsmanship | Confidence in materials, construction, finish, and the product promise. | That the brand is distinctive or emotionally meaningful. |
| Price and perceived value | A signal of positioning and an expression of what customers believe the product is worth. | That the product, design, or experience justifies the price. |
| Design identity and story | A reason to choose the label beyond functional attributes; it can make the offer recognizable and meaningful. | That the product delivers on its promises or appeals equally across markets. |
| Distribution and access | Shapes where, how, and through what relationships customers encounter the brand. | That scarcity alone will create desire or full-price demand. |
| Customer experience | Service and recognition can deepen the relationship and reinforce desirability. | That every customer or market wants the same kind of service. |
BoF’s coverage of State of Fashion 2026 reported that 51 percent of global customers cited quality and 47 percent cited brand story as drivers of high-end brand perception. These are reported survey shares, not a ranking of brands or proof that either factor is sufficient on its own. The Business of Fashion, January 2026

Quality and craftsmanship set the floor
Strong materials and careful construction support trust, but they do not automatically make a label distinctive. When customers regard quality as an entry requirement, a brand also needs a recognizable point of view and a product that feels worth choosing over alternatives.
Price must make sense against value
A high price can communicate positioning, but it is not evidence of luxury by itself. The question is whether customers see a credible relationship between price and the product, design, service, and meaning they receive.
McKinsey and The Business of Fashion reported that personal luxury goods grew at a 5 percent compound annual rate from 2019 to 2023, a period they attributed to unprecedented demand and deep supply. The same report said price increases accounted for more than 80 percent of luxury-industry growth over that period. That historical growth mix is not a claim about every brand or the market today; it does help explain why price rises without corresponding product or creative improvements can strain perceived value. Design and story make the offer recognizable
A clear identity gives customers a reason to connect a product to a particular label. The story must be borne out in the design and customer experience: a polished narrative cannot compensate for an undifferentiated offer.
Access is more than scarcity
Controlled distribution can shape how customers encounter a brand, but making products hard to obtain does not, by itself, establish desirability. McKinsey’s June 2026 findings describe exclusivity in terms that can include recognition, access, and experiences. The form differs by market: surveyed US consumers were more receptive to early access and membership-like benefits, while surveyed Chinese consumers placed more weight on bespoke service and trusted adviser relationships. These examples should not be treated as a prescription for every luxury label.
Experience turns a transaction into a relationship
Service, cultural relevance, and personal recognition can strengthen the emotional connection around a product. The right experience depends on the customer and market; luxury does not require every brand to use the same service model or channel strategy.

Why market context matters
Luxury is not a fixed checklist that consumers apply identically everywhere. McKinsey’s June 2026 report focuses on US and Chinese clients and finds that the meaning of value, desirability, and exclusivity depends increasingly on location. In its findings, US consumers showed greater openness to challenger brands, while Chinese consumers placed more weight on trust, recognition, brand authority, and high-touch service. Those are market-specific research findings rather than laws about all US or Chinese shoppers.
The broader market was also in transition in Bain & Company and Altagamma’s Spring 2026 update. It reported worldwide luxury spending of €1,443 billion in 2025 and personal luxury goods spending of €358 billion, down 2 percent at current exchange rates and up 1 percent at constant exchange rates versus 2024. Bain’s 2026 base-case forecast was growth of 2 to 4 percent for personal luxury goods, to €365–€373 billion; that is a forecast, not a realized result. Bain also reported that luxury experiences were outpacing tangible goods and that resale and AI were increasingly part of shopping journeys. Bain & Company and Altagamma, Spring 2026

Bain senior partner Bruno Lannes described the shift this way: “The luxury market is stabilizing, but this is not a return to the old rhythm, it is the emergence of a new one.” The update also said consumers were moving toward a relationship with luxury defined by meaning, not just product. Bain reported that roughly half of luxury shoppers consult the secondhand market before buying new, another sign that customers assess value and access through more than a brand’s own retail channels.
A practical way to assess a fashion brand’s luxury positioning
Rather than relying on a single signal such as price or a famous name, consider how the dimensions reinforce one another:
- Product: Is there evidence of quality and craftsmanship that supports the brand’s promise?
- Value: Does the price feel credible in relation to the product, design, service, and meaning on offer?
- Identity: Can customers recognize what makes the brand’s design and story distinct?
- Access: Does the way products are sold and experienced reinforce the brand’s positioning, rather than depending only on restricted availability?
- Relationship: Does the customer experience create recognition or emotional connection that suits the relevant market?
This framework helps explain positioning; it does not establish a brand-by-brand quality ranking. A convincing luxury offer is a coherent whole, and the relative importance of its parts can vary with audience and place.
