A deep image of M104, the Sombrero Galaxy, reveals a faint stellar halo and stream-like structures far beyond its familiar bright disk and dark dust lane. Those features are interpreted as signs of past gravitational encounters and mergers, although the image alone cannot establish exactly how many occurred or when.

What does the deep image of M104 reveal?

NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for October 5, 2026, features a deep image of M104 credited to Engelbert Vollmer. The familiar dark dust lane gives the galaxy its hat-like appearance, but the long exposure brings out much fainter features: a broad, hazy stellar halo around the disk, a diagonal ring, and other stream-like structures. The image also shows unresolved stars in the extended light around the galaxy. NASA/APOD’s October 5, 2026 image and caption describes the exposure as spanning seven days in mid-2026 from Namibia; it does not specify the telescope, camera, filters, or processing workflow.

The APOD caption gives M104’s distance from Earth as about 30 million light-years and its full span as about 150 thousand light-years. These are approximate figures reported in the caption. The extended halo and faint structures make clear why a deep image can show much more than the galaxy’s bright central region and dust lane.

What are the tidal streams around the Sombrero Galaxy?

Tidal streams are elongated features of stars associated with the gravitational disruption of material. In M104’s image, the diagonal ring and faint stream-like structures are interpreted as traces of interactions with smaller galaxies. NASA’s caption describes them as evidence of a violent past involving collisions and mergers. Their presence supports that broad interpretation; appearance alone does not reveal a complete history.

A peer-reviewed study titled “A feather on the hat: Tracing the giant stellar stream around the Sombrero galaxy” examines M104’s giant stellar stream and how its formation can constrain the galaxy’s merger history. The study’s abstract discusses a proposed past major-merger scenario. That is a research interpretation, not a fact proved uniquely by the APOD photograph.

What can the image tell us—and what remains uncertain?

The deep image makes faint structure visible; scientific analysis is needed to test what produced it. The streams are relevant evidence about how M104 assembled, but one image cannot by itself determine the exact number, timing, or sequence of past mergers. Researchers use the stream’s properties to evaluate possible histories rather than treating a visual resemblance as a complete record.

The practical distinction is between what is observed and what is inferred: the image shows extended light and stream-like features, while the merger history is an explanation assessed through research. The APOD caption and the peer-reviewed study offer complementary context, but neither should be read as making the photograph a definitive reconstruction of every event in M104’s past.

How was the featured image made?

According to NASA/APOD, Vollmer’s image was collected over seven days in mid-2026 from Namibia. Its extended exposure reveals details too faint to be implied as readily visible through ordinary casual viewing. The page does not identify the equipment or imaging settings, so no specific telescope or camera can be inferred from the caption.
