A loan charge-off means a bank has judged some amount of a loan uncollectible and removed it from its books, charging the loss against its allowance for credit losses. It is evidence of recognized credit losses, but it does not, by itself, show whether the bank is financially sound. To assess that, compare charge-offs with the bank’s loan mix, past-due and noncurrent loans, allowance, provisions, earnings, capital, and liquidity.
What is a loan charge-off?
The Federal Reserve defines charge-offs as “the value of loans and leases removed from the books and charged against loss reserves.” In practical terms, the bank reduces the reported loan asset by an amount it considers uncollectible and applies the loss against its allowance for credit losses.
A charge-off is an accounting recognition of loss, not necessarily a sign that the bank has stopped trying to collect. The definition concerns removal from the books; it does not specify whether collection activity continues.

Net charge-offs are gross charge-offs less recoveries—amounts collected after a loan or part of a loan was charged off. Rate comparisons commonly use net rather than gross charge-offs. The Federal Reserve calculates category rates by dividing net charge-offs during the quarter by average loans outstanding for that category, then annualizing the result. See the Federal Reserve’s charge-off and delinquency data and its rate calculation methodology.
#1 Best Overall
Keep the measurement period attached to a rate: an annualized quarterly rate is not the same as a raw dollar total or a rate calculated over a full year.
How is a charge-off different from delinquency?
Delinquency describes payment status; a charge-off records an amount the bank has recognized as uncollectible. The Federal Reserve’s delinquency measure includes loans at least 30 days past due that are still accruing interest, as well as loans in nonaccrual status. Because these measures track different things, they can move at different times. A loan can become delinquent before a loss is charged off, and a charge-off can reduce the balance of loans reported as noncurrent.
Rank #2
What do charge-offs mean for a bank’s financial health?
A higher charge-off rate generally means the bank recognized more net credit losses relative to its average loan base during the measured period. Losses use up the allowance; provisions to replenish that allowance can reduce earnings. The significance depends on how the figure compares with prior periods and the bank’s own loan categories—not just on whether the rate rose.
A lower rate is not automatically proof that risk has improved. The bank may have charged off a prior wave of troubled loans, its average loan balance may have changed, or its portfolio mix may have shifted. Check delinquencies, noncurrent loans, provisions, allowance coverage, and the bank’s disclosures alongside the rate.

How to evaluate a bank’s charge-offs
- Match the period and basis. Compare the same quarter year over year and, where useful, quarter over quarter. Confirm whether a rate is annualized and whether the figure is net of recoveries.
- Compare similar loan categories. Credit cards, auto loans, commercial real estate, and other portfolios can have different loss patterns. An aggregate rate can conceal increases in one category and decreases in another.
- Check payment and credit status. Review past-due, nonaccrual, and noncurrent-loan measures to see whether trouble is building or changing alongside realized losses.
- Review the allowance and provisions. The allowance is a balance-sheet estimate of expected credit losses, not a tally of losses already realized. Under current accounting terminology, bank filings generally refer to the allowance for credit losses; read the institution’s notes for its reporting basis. The Federal Reserve explains the allowance’s purpose and contra-asset presentation in its allowance for loan and lease losses supervisory topic.
- Put credit costs beside earnings. Look at provision expense and overall profitability for the same period. A charge-off rate alone does not show how much loss the bank can absorb from current earnings.
- Assess capital and liquidity separately. Capital helps absorb losses, while liquidity concerns meeting obligations as they come due. Neither is established by the charge-off ratio. The FDIC reports these as distinct dimensions of banking condition.
- Check what population is being measured. FDIC-insured institution aggregates, Federal Reserve commercial-bank series, and a single bank’s filing may cover different institutions and use different reporting bases. Avoid treating them as directly interchangeable.
What recent U.S. banking data show
Industry averages provide context, not a pass-or-fail threshold for an individual bank. The FDIC’s Q1 2026 Quarterly Banking Profile reported a net charge-offs-to-loans ratio of 0.59% for FDIC-insured institutions, compared with 0.67% in Q1 2025. For Q1 2026, the profile also reported aggregate net income of $80.5 billion and return on assets of 1.26%; these broad earnings indicators do not establish the health of any one bank. See the FDIC Quarterly Banking Profile.
In its Q4 2025 profile, the FDIC reported a quarterly net charge-off rate of 0.63%, one basis point above the preceding quarter and eight basis points below the year-earlier quarter. That rate was 0.15 percentage point above the stated pre-pandemic average of 0.48%. The aggregate past-due and nonaccrual rate was 1.56%, below the FDIC’s stated pre-pandemic average of 1.94%, while the agency noted persistent weakness in selected portfolios, including non-owner-occupied and multifamily commercial real estate, auto, and credit cards.
Rank #4
For Q4 2025, the FDIC reported $20.9 billion in credit-loss provision expense, roughly in line with the prior quarter and equal to total net charge-offs in that quarter. Its reserve coverage ratio was 171.2%; the ratio declined slightly as the funded allowance fell and noncurrent loan balances rose. This coverage ratio compares the aggregate allowance with noncurrent loans. It is a balance-sheet coverage measure, not a realized-loss rate.

These are figures for their stated quarters, not timeless measures. The FDIC says its profile summarizes the aggregate condition of FDIC-insured institutions and is usually published about 55 days after quarter end. The Q1 2026 profile was available in the cited results; a June 30, 2026 reporting date listed for the QBP Graph Book does not, by itself, supply comparable Q2 2026 profile figures.

Where to find the figures for a specific bank
For a named institution, use its latest quarterly filing and disclosures rather than relying on an industry average. Compare like periods and loan categories, then read the charge-off figures with its credit-quality measures, allowance, provisions, earnings, capital, and liquidity. That combination is more informative than any single ratio.
