No single failure mechanism limits every organic solar cell. Long-term stability is a system property controlled by oxygen and moisture ingress, light-driven chemistry, heat, changes in the donor–acceptor morphology, and failures in electrodes or transport interfaces. These processes can occur sequentially or at the same time, so a cell with a well-protected active layer can still lose output through its cathode, buffer layer, or encapsulation.
Encapsulation is important because it slows oxygen and water from reaching sensitive materials, but it cannot stop photochemical reactions, thermal rearrangement, or all interface reactions inside the sealed stack. The meaningful question is therefore not “What is the one cause of degradation?” but “Which layer is changing under this device’s particular light, temperature, atmosphere, architecture, and test protocol?”
Why stability is a whole-device problem
An organic photovoltaic (OPV) cell is a multilayer system. It normally includes a substrate, transparent electrode, hole- or electron-selective transport layers, a light-absorbing organic active layer, a counter electrode, and some form of barrier or encapsulation. Power-conversion efficiency depends on all of those layers continuing to perform together.
The active layer is usually a donor–acceptor bulk heterojunction. Its nanoscale domains create interfaces where excitons can split into free charges, while connected pathways let electrons and holes reach their respective electrodes. That arrangement is deliberately engineered, but it is not always the lowest-energy arrangement of the molecules. It can therefore be metastable: exposure to heat, light, or both may let molecules diffuse, reorganize, or aggregate.

A device may consequently show several stages of decline. Early losses can arise from illumination-induced chemical changes or defects; later losses may reflect oxygen ingress, electrode corrosion, diffusion through buffer layers, or gradual morphological coarsening. Because the dominant route depends on materials, architecture, encapsulation, and stress conditions, lifetime rankings from one device family cannot automatically be transferred to another.
The main mechanisms that reduce efficiency
Oxygen and moisture ingress
Oxygen and water are among the best-known external stressors. They can permeate through imperfect barriers, edge seals, pinholes, or defects and then participate in oxidation reactions involving organic absorbers, electrodes, and interfaces. The 2014 Pacific Northwest National Laboratory review emphasizes degradation near the organic-layer/cathode interface, where oxygen and water can alter contact chemistry and impede charge extraction. The 2016 stability review likewise identifies barrier performance as essential for slowing long-term oxidation.
Moisture can also change the electrical properties of transport layers and promote corrosion or delamination. These effects are often spatially nonuniform: an edge or a local barrier defect can fail before the center of the device, producing localized dark areas or shunts. A barrier that looks adequate in an average water-vapor-transmission specification may still be undermined by a poor seal or an unprotected cut edge.

Light is not merely the energy source; it is also a chemical stressor. Photons can create excited states that react with oxygen, impurities, or neighboring molecules. Conjugated structures may be altered, new electronic defects may appear, and recombination can increase. Voltage, current, fill factor, or a combination of them may fall even when the cell is kept in a dry, inert environment.

Rapid initial loss is commonly called burn-in. The 2016 review reports relative-efficiency losses of roughly 10% to 50% during photo-induced burn-in in the devices covered by that literature. That range is not a guaranteed loss for every OPV; it is a literature-specific observation whose magnitude depends on the material system and test conditions. The same review states that “the cause of photo-induced VOC is not as well understood as the other degradation mechanisms.” In other words, some early voltage losses remained unresolved in that 2016 assessment, and later material systems may behave differently.
The newer 2026 review describes light-induced chemical changes in conjugated molecules, growth in defects, and increased recombination as continuing concerns. Light soaking can therefore reveal failure modes that a dark shelf-life test will miss.
Heat and active-layer morphology evolution
Temperature accelerates chemical reactions and molecular motion. In a bulk heterojunction, heating can allow donor and acceptor molecules to diffuse or reorganize. Small domains may merge into larger regions, producing phase separation on a scale that is less effective for exciton splitting and charge transport. Charges then travel farther through unsuitable material, recombine more often, and contribute less current.
Thermal cycling adds mechanical and interfacial stress because different layers expand and contract by different amounts. Repeated cycling can promote cracking, delamination, or diffusion of electrode and buffer-layer components. The 2026 review identifies physical evolution of morphology as a key source of thermal instability in the systems it surveys; it does not imply that every OPV has the same thermal threshold.

Electrodes, transport layers, and interfaces
It is a mistake to diagnose every efficiency loss as active-layer failure. Electrodes can oxidize, react with neighboring materials, or lose conductivity. Hole- and electron-selective layers can diffuse, decompose, or develop unfavorable energy-level alignment. Interfacial reactions can increase contact resistance or create traps that block extraction.
A 2011 National Renewable Energy Laboratory poster, Understanding Degradation Pathways in Organic Photovoltaics, reported shelf-life and light-soaking observations in which commonly used electrode materials were unstable while some active layers remained relatively stable. In those devices, engineering charge-selective layers improved environmental stability. The authors wrote: “We show that engineering of the hole/electron layer at the electrode can lead to environmentally stable devices even without encapsulation.” That statement describes the authors’ devices, not a universal exemption from barrier requirements.
The observation is important diagnostically: the weak point can be the contact stack rather than the absorber. A cathode-side reaction highlighted in the 2014 PNNL review may produce a similar power loss to active-layer oxidation, so layer-specific analysis is needed before selecting a remedy.

Stability reviews also identify mechanical stress, irradiation, heating, oxygen, water, electrode or buffer-layer diffusion, and metastable morphology as interacting factors. A flexible module may bend while hot and illuminated; a rooftop module may experience humidity, ultraviolet exposure, and daily temperature swings; a laboratory cell may be tested under only one of those stresses.

Single-stressor experiments are useful for isolating mechanisms, but they cannot by themselves prove service life in every environment. Combined exposure can create pathways that do not appear in separate light-only, heat-only, or humidity-only tests.
Why encapsulation helps but cannot stop all degradation
Glass, multilayer films, edge seals, and other barriers reduce the rate at which oxygen and water enter a device. Good encapsulation can therefore suppress oxidation and extend the useful period before environmental reactions dominate. It also protects vulnerable electrodes and interfaces from ambient humidity.
However, encapsulation does not freeze the internal stack. Photochemical reactions can proceed under illumination, and heat can still drive molecular diffusion, phase separation, electrode reactions, or stress from thermal expansion. A sealed cell may also contain residual oxygen, water, solvents, or defects introduced during fabrication. Encapsulation should be treated as one layer of a stability strategy, not as a guarantee of indefinite operation.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to read lifetime claims and T80 values
The most common operational metric in recent OPV literature is T80: the elapsed time until power-conversion efficiency reaches 80% of its initial value. T80 is an operational endpoint, not a universal product lifetime or a prediction that a module stops working at that moment. It says nothing about the remaining 80% output unless the measurement protocol and starting value are known.

| Test detail | Why it changes the meaning of a reported lifetime |
|---|---|
| Device architecture and material stack | Different donors, acceptors, electrodes, and transport layers fail through different pathways. |
| Encapsulation and atmosphere | An encapsulated cell in nitrogen is not directly comparable with an unencapsulated cell in air. |
| Light spectrum and intensity | Photon energy and dose affect photochemistry; a laboratory lamp may not reproduce sunlight. |
| Temperature | Controlled temperature and temperature that rises under illumination impose different thermal stresses. |
| Test mode | Continuous operation, dark shelf storage, and accelerated stress answer different questions. |
| Endpoint and measurement method | T80, open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, fill factor, and efficiency can reveal different failure stages. |
Always read a T80 value with those conditions attached. A 2016 review cautions that screening only at 85 °C and 85% relative humidity does not capture degradation under light. Accelerated-test results should not be converted into a field lifetime unless a justified model, activation assumptions, and uncertainty are stated. There is no single market-wide lifetime statistic that applies to all organic solar cells.

- Record the baseline. Measure the initial current–voltage curve and efficiency, and retain the individual values for open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, fill factor, and series resistance where available.
- Define the exposure. Write down illumination spectrum and intensity, temperature, humidity, atmosphere, electrical load, and whether the device is encapsulated. Note whether temperature is controlled or rises during light soaking.
- Separate dark and illuminated aging. A large loss only during light soaking points toward photochemical or photo-oxidative processes; a similar loss in the dark suggests thermal, chemical, diffusion, or mechanical pathways.
- Check environmental entry points. Inspect edges, seals, pinholes, discoloration, bubbles, and delamination. Compare center and edge regions if spatial measurements are possible.
- Compare electrical signatures. A fall in voltage can indicate altered energetics, recombination, or contact reactions; a fall in current is consistent with optical, absorption, transport, or morphology changes; a fill-factor loss often points to resistance, shunts, or extraction problems. These clues are not unique diagnoses.
- Inspect the layer stack. Use appropriate chemical, optical, structural, or microscopy methods to distinguish active-layer changes from electrode and transport-layer degradation. Do not assume the absorber is the culprit without evidence.
- Report the endpoint transparently. State the test duration, failure threshold, measurement interval, and whether the value is a T80, shelf-life, or accelerated-stress result.
Strategies that address different failure routes
| Stability strategy | Primary pathway addressed | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Higher-performance encapsulation and edge sealing | Oxygen and moisture ingress, corrosion, and environmental attack | Does not prevent internal photochemistry or heat-driven morphology change. |
| More chemically and thermally stable absorber materials | Photo-oxidation, molecular decomposition, and temperature-induced reactions | A more stable molecule can still be paired with an unstable contact or morphology. |
| Morphology control and diffusion suppression | Domain coarsening, aggregation, and thermal phase separation | The morphology must remain compatible with charge generation and transport. |
| Stable electrodes and optimized transport layers | Contact reactions, diffusion, corrosion, and extraction losses | Improving one interface does not remove stress elsewhere in the stack. |
| Inverted device architectures | Can reduce exposure of vulnerable contacts and enable more robust layer combinations | Benefits depend on the exact materials and processing sequence. |
| Combined light, heat, humidity, and cycling tests | Interactions that single-stressor tests overlook | Tests must still specify conditions and cannot automatically predict every field environment. |
The 2016 and 2026 reviews discuss these approaches as complementary rather than interchangeable. Material design, barrier engineering, morphology control, interface optimization, and realistic testing must be developed together.
What a credible stability comparison should include
- The complete architecture, including donor, acceptor, electrodes, transport layers, substrate, and encapsulation.
- The initial efficiency and the individual electrical parameters used to calculate it.
- Light source, spectrum, intensity, exposure geometry, and whether operation is continuous.
- Temperature, humidity, atmosphere, and any temperature rise caused by illumination.
- Whether the result is from shelf storage, light soaking, thermal aging, or a combined protocol.
- The endpoint definition, such as T80, and the method used to measure efficiency.
- Whether the result comes from one device or a statistically described set of devices.
- Any acceleration model used to relate laboratory stress to an intended application, along with its assumptions.
Without those details, two apparently different lifetime numbers may simply reflect different tests. A long dark shelf-life result does not establish long operational life under sunlight, and a short accelerated test does not become a field prediction merely because its temperature or humidity is higher.
The bottom line for organic photovoltaic durability
Long-term stability is limited by interacting changes throughout the device: oxygen and moisture attack, light-induced chemistry and burn-in, heat-driven morphology evolution, unstable electrodes or transport interfaces, and mechanical or coupled environmental stress. Encapsulation is necessary for many architectures, but it addresses only part of the problem. The most durable designs combine effective barriers with stable materials, controlled donor–acceptor morphology, robust contacts, and tests that reproduce the relevant light, heat, humidity, and operating conditions.
