Short answer: the durability of buoyant metamaterials depends on how well their materials, sealed buoyant volume, and interfaces resist corrosion, water ingress, pressure-driven damage, and repeated loading. A 2026 study of a titanium–polyurethane open-cell lattice showed promising results after two weeks in natural seawater, but did not report deep-pressure qualification or pressure cycling. Its long-term service life in deep water is therefore not established.
What is the buoyant metamaterial, and what did the seawater test show?
The 2026 demonstrator combines a laser powder-bed-fused Ti-6Al-4V metal lattice with expandable polyurethane (PU) foam injected into hollow struts. The exterior remains open to water flow; the foam is intended to preserve buoyancy by keeping water from replacing the trapped volume. The study describes it as a buoyant metal–polymer open-cell hybrid lattice.
Noronha et al. tested specimens for two weeks in natural seawater from Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia. The seawater density was 1.03 g/cm³. After exposure, the authors reported mass loss of 0.15 ± 0.03%, an average yield-strength decrease of 0.37 ± 0.12%, and an average ultimate-compressive-strength decrease of 0.86 ± 0.42% compared with otherwise identical unexposed specimens. These are results from that exposure and test setup, not a forecast of service life.

The study also reported buoyant behavior after more than two months of freshwater immersion. That ambient immersion assessment does not establish performance under deep hydrostatic pressure. The approximately 100 mm-high, 85 mm-wide demonstrator was evaluated in natural seawater under controlled oscillatory flow and remained afloat despite rotation; it was not demonstrated or qualified for subsea deployment.

Why pressure and seawater can shorten service life
Water ingress can reduce buoyancy
If water enters a material’s buoyant volume or its internal defects, the component can lose buoyancy. A closed-cell PU infill is intended to limit water replacement in the hybrid lattice, but the two-week seawater result does not establish how well the infill excludes water over years, through repeated dives, or under pressure cycling.
A separate 2026 study of polymer-matrix solid buoyancy material found that water absorption increased with repeated hydrostatic-pressure use. It linked degradation to stress relaxation, redistribution of internal stress, local stress concentrations, and microcrack initiation. This identifies plausible durability concerns for polymer-based buoyancy materials; it does not demonstrate that the Ti-6Al-4V/PU lattice fails by those mechanisms.

Repeated loading can initiate cracks
In a 2024 study, polyurethane foam exposed to artificial seawater for 400 days showed microcrack initiation and propagation, including window-burst. In confined-compression tests, the foam’s elastic modulus and yield stress followed a U-shaped evolution. This was a different foam and configuration from the lattice’s PU infill, so the findings point to mechanisms to test rather than measured aging of the lattice.

Interfaces, defects, and geometry matter
In assembled deep-sea syntactic-foam buoyancy components, cracks can be affected by adhesive interfaces, material variation between blocks, and geometry. A 2026 numerical and experimental study of epoxy syntactic-foam assemblies reported that block heterogeneity reduced modeled crack-initiation pressure by up to 10.40%; optimized bonding topology and cylindrical geometry increased crack resistance by up to 20.74% and 27.71%, respectively. Those values apply to the assemblies studied, not the open-cell titanium–PU lattice.

Can buoyant lattice materials withstand deep-sea pressure?
The available direct test does not answer that question. Noronha et al. reported short-term seawater exposure, freshwater buoyancy assessment, and mechanical damage demonstrations, including node damage and fracture of a lattice layer. Those demonstrations were not pressure-vessel or deep-ocean tests.
The reviewed sources do not establish the lattice’s qualified depth, pressure-cycle capacity, long-term seawater life, or behavior when seawater and deep pressure act together. Freshwater immersion, a short seawater soak, and cyclic hydrostatic-pressure testing are different exposures; success in one cannot stand in for the others.

What a meaningful durability qualification should measure
A durability claim is useful only when the exposure and measured outcome are clear. For this architecture, qualification should report:
- Environment: freshwater, natural seawater, or artificial seawater, including relevant water conditions.
- Pressure protocol: maximum hydrostatic pressure, cycle count, dwell time, ramp rate, and whether specimens recover or dry between cycles.
- Duration: continuous exposure time as well as pressure-cycle count; neither alone describes all service profiles.
- Performance before and after exposure: buoyancy or water uptake, mass change, strength or modulus retention, and crack initiation or propagation.
- Specimen and manufacturing details: whether testing covers small coupons, lattice sections, joints, or a full assembled demonstrator, and how defects and material variation are handled.
A 2014 characterization paper noted that, in its research context, no standard procedure existed for testing materials under pure hydrostatic pressure and proposed tracking buoyancy loss. That historical observation does not establish which standards apply today.

How long can a buoyant metamaterial last in seawater?
For the Ti-6Al-4V/PU lattice, the published direct seawater result covers two weeks, while the reported freshwater buoyancy assessment exceeded two months. Neither establishes a multi-year seawater service life. The available evidence also does not provide a direct combined seawater-and-pressure test for this lattice, so a reliable lifetime or maximum operating depth cannot be stated.
