There is no universal distance rating for a 1.6 Tb/s optical wavelength. Reach depends on the complete transmission system and the fiber route: coherent long-haul equipment can carry a 1.6 Tb/s carrier over a demonstrated 296 km route, while separate datacenter studies examine different systems and shorter distances. The rate alone—and fiber quality alone—cannot predict how far a link will work.
What does “1.6 Tb/s per wavelength” tell you about reach?
It describes the data rate carried on one optical carrier, not a maximum distance. To assess reach, engineers need to know how the signal is encoded and received, the characteristics and length of the fiber route, and whether the signal arrives with enough quality for the receiver to recover the data. A result on one route is evidence for that system and route, not a guarantee for every fiber link.
It is also important to distinguish system types. Coherent long-haul transport and short-reach datacenter designs have different applications and transmission approaches. Their distance figures are not interchangeable specifications for a generic 1.6 Tb/s wavelength.

| Example | Distance or target | System and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T Newark–Philadelphia | 296 km | AT&T reported a commercial-network trial on existing long-haul fiber. It carried a single 1.6 Tb/s carrier alongside existing 100 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s wavelengths. |
| Verizon Boston metro | Not stated in Verizon’s November 25, 2024 announcement | Verizon reported a live metro-fiber trial carrying 1.6 Tb/s on one carrier using Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme. |
| O-band coherent datacenter design | 2–10 km target | A 2024 Journal of Lightwave Technology paper proposed a single-carrier coherent design for intra-datacenter links; this is a research proposal, not an operator reach guarantee. |
| O-band IM/DD dispersion study | 2, 10, 20 and 40 km evaluated | A 2025 Journal of Lightwave Technology study examined dispersion-related limitations for intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) systems. The available abstract does not establish a best-performing distance or quote thresholds. |
The 296 km figure is a route-specific field demonstration, not a universal maximum. Likewise, distances evaluated in research papers describe those studies’ systems and questions; they do not establish that every link of the same length will support 1.6 Tb/s.

What AT&T’s trial demonstrates
In its March 12, 2025 announcement, AT&T said it tested 1.6 Tb/s on a single carrier over 296 km of its commercial Newark–Philadelphia long-distance network. The company said two 800 GbE signals were multiplexed in Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme. AT&T identified a 200 Gbaud design and a 3 nm coherent digital signal processor (DSP) ASIC. These details describe that implementation; they are not universal requirements for every 1.6 Tb/s link.
Which factors limit reach?
Reach is a link-budget problem: the transmitted signal must remain recoverable after losses and distortions along the route. Several factors interact, so changing one does not by itself determine the final distance.

- Signal power and optical noise: Signal attenuation reduces received power, while noise affects how clearly the receiver can distinguish the signal. Amplification can help compensate for span loss, but the full system must still meet its signal-quality requirements.
- Chromatic dispersion: Fiber dispersion spreads and distorts the signal waveform. NTT Network Innovation Laboratories’ 2024 discussion says transmission-line waveform distortion becomes pronounced in proportion to the square of symbol rate. NTT also reports that, for its 2 km LAN-WDM results, transmission performance for 1.6-Tbit/s signals depends on the fiber’s chromatic-dispersion characteristics.
- Symbol rate and modulation: Baud rate, modulation format and receiver design affect how much information is carried and how sensitive the signal is to impairments. AT&T’s 200 Gbaud trial is an example of a particular design, not a reach prescription.
- Fiber route and components: Route length, fiber characteristics, splices, connectors and operating conditions can all matter to the link budget. “Fiber quality” is not one scalar rating, and the cited sources do not establish individual pass/fail thresholds for these factors.
- Nonlinear effects, DSP and error correction: Nonlinear transmission penalties, the receiver’s digital signal processing and forward-error correction (FEC) contribute to whether the received data can be recovered. They must be considered with power, noise and dispersion rather than treated as independent distance guarantees.
The available reports do not establish universal optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) margins, FEC thresholds, attenuation budgets or a single reach ceiling. Those values depend on the specific system and route.
Why do coherent and IM/DD links have different reach expectations?
Coherent systems recover information using the optical signal’s phase and amplitude, supported by receiver-side digital processing. They are used in high-capacity transport examples such as AT&T’s long-haul trial. IM/DD systems encode information in optical intensity and detect that intensity directly. The 2025 O-band study examines how fiber dispersion constrains that kind of 1.6 Tb/s system over several specified distances.

The flame-retardant jacket minimizes toxic gas emissions in the event of fire, enhancing safety in enclosed or high-density environments. Ideal for data centers, riser closets, and structured cabling projects requiring efficient and secure deployment.
These are different engineering configurations and study scopes. Comparing a coherent 296 km operator trial with an IM/DD datacenter dispersion study as if one were a universal limit for the other would be misleading. Even within one category, the fiber route and the link budget still matter.

- Identify the evidence. Is the number from a live field trial, a proposed design or a study of modeled or evaluated distances?
- Match the application and route. A long-haul operator route and an intra-datacenter interconnect have different deployment contexts.
- Check the transmission method and band. Look for coherent versus IM/DD operation and, where specified, the wavelength band and fiber dispersion characteristics.
- Read the implementation details. Baud rate, modulation, DSP, FEC, amplification and the route’s optical budget help explain what the distance result means.
- Do not generalize a single trial. A demonstrated distance supports the claim for that reported system and route; it does not establish a fleet-wide typical reach or a maximum for all 1.6 Tb/s links.
For example, AT&T’s 296 km result is a commercial-network field trial with a stated route and coherent equipment details. The 2–10 km O-band coherent paper is a research proposal, while the 2025 O-band IM/DD paper studies dispersion limitations at four distances. Each answers a different engineering question.
