Light bulb color temperature describes the apparent color of its light, measured as correlated color temperature (CCT) in kelvin (K). A lower Kelvin number looks warmer and more yellow; a higher one looks cooler and bluer. It describes the light’s appearance—not how bright the bulb is.
What does color temperature mean on a light bulb?
Correlated color temperature is a specification for the color appearance of a lamp’s light. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) explains that it relates the lamp’s color to the color of light from a reference source heated to a particular temperature, and is measured in kelvin. The “temperature” is therefore a way to describe the appearance of the light, not the bulb’s heat or power use.
The scale runs opposite to the way many people expect from everyday temperature: lower numbers look warmer and more yellowish, while higher numbers look cooler and bluer. ENERGY STAR describes the same relationship in its lighting guide.

How do Kelvin ratings compare?
Labels such as “soft white,” “cool white,” and “daylight” are broad descriptions, not exact standards for one color. Check the printed Kelvin value when comparing bulbs; ENERGY STAR’s examples show how the appearance changes across common ratings.

- SWITCH ON BULB. YOUR LIGHT, YOUR WAY. – A preset switch built directly into the base of the bulb lets you cycle through five color temperatures, 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, and 5000K, without any app, hub, or extra wiring required. From the warmest soft white for a relaxing evening at home to the crispest daylight for a focused and productive work session, the A19 gives you complete control over the tone, feel, and mood of any room with nothing more than a simple press of the switch on bulb.
- FIVE COLOR TEMPERATURES. ONE BULB. – The 5CCT A19 covers the full range of adjustable white light in a single, general purpose bulb that works across every room and every mood in the home. 800 lumens of output at 90+ CRI ensures that every color temperature renders colors accurately and faithfully, whether you are lighting a kitchen, a living room, a bedroom, or a home office. Change the feel of any space in an instant without replacing the bulb or purchasing a different one for each setting.
- DIM IT DOWN. – Fully dimmable and compatible with most standard LED dimmer switches, the A19 lets you set the exact brightness you want at any color temperature for smooth, continuous control with no buzzing, flickering, or stepping at any level. Whether you are creating the right atmosphere for a dinner gathering, winding down at the end of a long evening, or simply adjusting the light to match the natural light coming through a window, the bulb responds precisely the way you want it to.
- LIGHT EVERY CORNER. – A wide 270-degree beam angle sends 800 lumens of adjustable white light in every direction the room needs it, eliminating the dim spots and uneven coverage that narrower bulbs leave behind. The E26 medium base and standard A19 form factor fit virtually any general purpose fixture in the home, from table lamps and floor lamps to ceiling fixtures and pendant lights, with no adapters and no modifications required for a clean, simple, and straightforward drop-in installation.
- BUILT FOR WHEREVER LIFE HAPPENS. – Rated for damp locations, the A19 is right at home in bathrooms, covered entryways, laundry rooms, and any other space where humidity is a constant and regular part of the everyday environment. 15,000 hours of consistent, dimmable, adjustable white output means years of reliable performance across every room it occupies, with no color shift, no early burnout, and no need to keep a spare on hand for the moments you least expect a bulb to call it quits on you.
| Color temperature | Typical appearance or context |
|---|---|
| 2200K | Very warm example on ENERGY STAR’s consumer scale. |
| 2700K | Warm, familiar incandescent-like appearance. DOE lists homes, libraries, and restaurants as typical contexts. |
| 3000K | Warm and pleasing in DOE’s typical CCT examples. |
| 3500K | Neutral in DOE’s examples; ENERGY STAR places neutral/cool white around this area. |
| 4100K | Cooler, cleaner appearance. DOE lists offices, classrooms, and showrooms as typical contexts. |
| 5000K–6500K | Higher, cooler/bluer white examples on ENERGY STAR’s scale. |
These settings are examples, not rules for a room. A 2700K bulb may suit a space where you want a warmer appearance, while a higher rating may suit a preference for cooler-looking light. DOE’s guidance associates 2700K with homes and hospitality spaces and 4100K with offices and classrooms, but personal preference and the room’s use matter.
Is color temperature the same as brightness?
No. Color temperature describes whether the light looks warm or cool; brightness is measured in lumens. ENERGY STAR’s LED bulb guide explains the lumen measure. Choose a Kelvin rating for the color appearance you want and compare lumens separately for light output.

What else should you check when choosing a bulb?
- Fixture and base: Confirm the bulb fits the fixture and uses the right base.
- Brightness: Compare the lumen output rather than using Kelvin as a proxy for brightness.
- Color rendering: This is a separate specification describing how much object colors shift under the light compared with a reference source. DOE explains it in its color-rendering guidance.
- Dimming and controls: If you plan to dim the bulb or control it through an app or other system, check that the bulb and control are compatible.
Can a bulb change color temperature?
Yes. Some bulbs or fixtures offer adjustable white light. DOE distinguishes warm-dimming products, whose CCT decreases as output is reduced, from white-tunable products that can shift between warm and cool white. The DOE overview of tunable white lighting describes these approaches. Check a product’s stated Kelvin range and supported controls; adjustable features and compatibility vary by model.

How to choose a Kelvin rating
- Decide whether you prefer a warm, yellowish appearance or a cooler, bluer one.
- Compare the printed Kelvin values rather than relying only on labels such as “daylight.”
- Choose the brightness by comparing lumens, then verify the bulb’s fixture fit and any dimmer or control compatibility.
