Lenovo’s April 16, 2014 announcement covered FLEX 2 laptops, an A540 all-in-one desktop, and several other laptop families. The FLEX 2’s defining feature was a 300-degree hinge that let it switch between laptop and stand positions—not a 360-degree tablet-style hinge. Lenovo planned availability from June 2014 and announced U.S. starting prices of $799 for the 14-inch model and $429 for the 15.6-inch model. Those are historical launch details, not current prices or offers.
What the tax-refund headline meant
The original HotHardware listing was dated April 16, 2014, shortly after the U.S. tax filing deadline. Its reference to consumers spending a refund was a seasonal hook, not evidence that people generally use tax refunds to buy computers. The launch itself was a cluster of Lenovo consumer-PC announcements.
What made the FLEX 2 different
Lenovo announced 14-inch and 15.6-inch FLEX 2 laptops. Their displays rotated through 300 degrees, allowing laptop and stand modes. Stand mode was intended to make the touchscreen easier to use for viewing or touch interaction, while the device remained a laptop rather than converting into a detachable tablet.

Lenovo described optional full-HD screens and discrete graphics, as well as Intel and AMD processor choices across the product announcement. Storage configurations were listed up to 1 TB HDD or hybrid SSHD and up to 256 GB SSD; an optional backlit keyboard was also mentioned. These were configuration options, not specifications shared by every FLEX 2.

FLEX 2 14-inch configurations
Lenovo’s archived 14-inch platform specification sheet lists processor options ranging from Celeron and Pentium to fourth-generation Core i3, i5, and i7. Screen choices included 1366×768 HD and 1920×1080 FHD multitouch displays. Select configurations used NVIDIA GeForce 820M or 840M graphics, and storage options included HDD, SSHD, and SSD. Memory and battery capacity depended on the specific model. Those 14-inch platform details should not be assumed to describe every 15.6-inch version.
FLEX 2 launch price and timing
Lenovo announced U.S. starting prices of $799 for the 14-inch FLEX 2 and $429 for the 15.6-inch version, with availability expected to begin in June 2014. The difference in starting prices does not establish that the larger model was better equipped; each price was an entry point for a distinct configuration.
