In Lanterns, Manhunter reproduction appears possible in exceptional circumstances—but Chris Mundy’s explanation does not establish a repeatable process. As reported by Jen Lennon in an October 6, 2026 Entertainment Weekly interview recap, Noah’s birth followed an accidental, untested outcome involving Zoe’s tissue-regrowth technology.
How Noah’s birth is connected to the regrowth machine
The finale reveals that Zoe once used Manhunter tissue-regrowth technology to restore Sheriff Kerry Kane’s finger. Something went wrong, and Kerry became pregnant with Noah, who was born a Manhunter. The same technology is used in episode five, “Lights Out,” to regrow John Stewart’s skin after a car crash.
Mundy, Lanterns co-creator and showrunner, told Entertainment Weekly, as quoted in Lennon’s October 6, 2026 report, that the writers understood the machine as able to create human tissue and organs. In that interpretation, Noah’s origin came from an untested gray area: the technology’s reproductive effect had never been put to the test.
Was Zoe trying to create a Manhunter?
Mundy described Noah’s birth as “kind of accidental,” not the result of a deliberate attempt by Zoe to reproduce. He also said Zoe might have seen the accident as an opportunity to repopulate the Manhunters afterward.
#1 Best Overall
The writers imagined that Zoe tried to reproduce the result later, but those attempts are not shown on screen and did not succeed, according to Mundy’s account in Lennon’s report. That is writers’ room context, rather than an event depicted in the series.

- Established in the story: The machine regrows tissue, and Noah’s origin is linked to its use on Kerry.
- Mundy’s explanation: The writers saw the machine as capable of creating tissue and organs, making Noah’s birth possible through an accidental, untested mishap.
- Not established: A defined or repeatable method for Manhunter reproduction. The reported explanation supports an exceptional possibility, not a general rule about how Manhunters reproduce.
- Not shown: Zoe’s later unsuccessful attempts. Mundy described those as an idea the writers had, not as scenes in the show.
Lennon’s October 6, 2026 report attributes this explanation to an Entertainment Weekly interview. The account of the interview is the basis for the explanation here.
