Mohamed Diawara is the Knicks’ clearest second-year breakout candidate for 2026–27, but a leap is not guaranteed. Fans should watch whether he earns steady minutes, keeps making three-pointers, fits the team’s power-forward needs and gains the coach’s trust in consequential games.
Why Diawara is the Knicks’ breakout candidate
The Knicks are a veteran team, and Mohamed Diawara, 21, may be their only player under 25 with a good chance of regular rotation minutes, according to NBA.com’s 2026–27 season preview, updated September 22, 2026. A second-round pick, he appeared in games as a rookie in 2025–26 and made 36.9% of his three-point attempts.
The opportunity is tied to frontcourt flexibility, not a guaranteed promotion. The preview says the Knicks can use Karl-Anthony Towns at power forward alongside another big, or play smaller. It identifies OG Anunoby and Diawara as the roster’s only true fours, and says improvement in Diawara’s second year could make him a valuable piece. As preview author John Schuhmann puts it: “If the latter shows improvement in Year 2, he’s a valuable piece.”

1. Regular minutes that last
Track whether Diawara appears consistently in the rotation, rather than receiving brief runs tied to an injury or a particular matchup. Regular-season opportunities are anticipated, but the preview does not say he already has a secure rotation job. Continuity is a more meaningful sign of development than one spike in playing time.

2. Three-point shooting that holds up
His 36.9% from three in 2025–26 is a baseline, not a forecast. Watch whether he continues to convert from outside as opponents adjust, and whether his attempts fit naturally into the Knicks’ offense. A single hot stretch would be less persuasive than credible shooting across sustained opportunities.
3. A workable fit at power forward
Look for whether Diawara can handle true-four minutes in lineups with Towns at center, while remaining useful when the Knicks play smaller. The roster context makes those chances relevant, but the preview does not provide a detailed assessment of Diawara’s defense or other specific skills. Judge the role by whether the team can use him in those configurations, rather than assuming particular strengths.

4. Trust in meaningful games
Diawara was outside the Knicks’ playoff rotation last spring. Earning meaningful regular-season minutes would be a step; becoming a credible option for postseason minutes would be a stronger sign that the staff trusts him. The preview presents playoff action as a possibility if he improves, not an expectation.
How Pacôme Dadiet fits into the picture
Pacôme Dadiet is another young forward, but the NBA preview’s explicit breakout framing is about Diawara. The official Knicks roster page lists Dadiet as a second-year player and reports his 2025–26 averages as 1.7 points, 0.4 assists and 0.9 rebounds across 29 games. Those figures show limited production to date; they do not change which player the season preview identifies as the breakout candidate.

Opportunity matters as much as development
The Knicks’ veteran roster and relative lack of frontcourt depth create a possible route to regular-season chances for Diawara. They do not ensure that the chances will become a lasting role. If the roster is healthy, the preview expects he may see little postseason action, so regular-season consistency is the clearest early measure to follow.
