A game makes history and inheritance matter when time changes who holds power, a successor takes over with real consequences, and earlier choices stay visible or limit what later generations can do. A historical setting on its own does not do this. The past becomes mechanically important when age, death, succession, inherited traits, political obligations, or family memory actually change how you play.
The three conditions that make history matter
Many games use a medieval or ancient backdrop for art, names, and flavor. Those games can be enjoyable, but the history is decorative. A game where history matters usually meets three conditions:
- Time changes the people in power. Rulers age, die, and are replaced during play rather than remaining fixed.
- The successor inherits something that matters. That can be a title, land, relationships, traits, obligations, or rivalries.
- Earlier decisions persist. Later characters have to deal with prior choices as world states, political claims, family memory, or a written record.
If a game meets only the first condition, a death simply resets the protagonist. If it meets all three, a generation’s decisions become the constraints the next generation has to play within.

Three examples and what each one shows
Crusader Kings III
The Steam store listing for Crusader Kings III describes leading a noble house through the Middle Ages across generations. When the ruler dies, play continues with new playable heirs. The listing specifically names education, character traits, and genetics inherited by children as parts of the dynastic system. It also lists starting dates of 867, 1066, and 1178. These are the starts the listing names, not a measure of how historically accurate the game is or how it has changed since.

This game is the clearest example of succession as an ongoing political problem. The question is not only who inherits, but what the heir inherits and what kind of person they will be.
Old World
The Steam description for Old World frames play as leading an empire across multiple generations. It says characters grow old, gain experience, and eventually die, leaving room for the next generation. That makes leadership turnover central to the empire game.
Rank #2
- ECONOMIC STRATEGY GAME: Experience the retelling of the story of humanity, starting from Sumeria and ending with the modern day USA. Control the buildings and lands to collect gold for scoring at the end of the game.
- ENCOUNTER IMPORTANT PEOPLE & EVENTS: History of the World features over sixty influential people on Empire and Event cards along with capitals, cities, monuments, and forts.
- AREA CONTROL: Take control of land and buildings as important locations come into play,.
- ENGAGING GAME NIGHT: History of the World is perfect for 2-6 players. Gameplay lasts 30 minutes per play. Overall 60-180 Min.
The listing does not explain the inheritance rules in detail. Old World should be compared with Crusader Kings III on the basis of how leadership changes, not assumed to handle heirs, traits, or obligations the same way.
Bloodweight
The official Bloodweight site describes a family line of named people, heirs who have their own wills, succession, rival houses, and a chronicle of accumulated decisions. Inheritance is the game’s identity rather than a background system. The site presents inherited consequences as family and world memory that affect later heirs. This is the publisher’s own description of the premise, so it shows the design intent rather than independently verified play.

How the three games compare
The table below uses only what each official description states. Where a published description does not address a point, the cell says so instead of filling it in from assumption.
| Question | Crusader Kings III | Old World | Bloodweight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role of history | Middle Ages setting with listed starts of 867, 1066, and 1178 (Steam listing) | Multi-generation empire setting (Steam description) | Family line and world memory are the core premise (official site) |
| What passes to the heir | Playable heirs; inherited traits, education, and genetics named (Steam listing) | Not stated in the listing | Heirs with their own wills; rival houses (official site) |
| How succession happens | Ruler’s death leads to new playable heirs (Steam listing) | Characters age, gain experience, and die, leaving room for the next generation (Steam description) | Succession is a central system (official site); mechanics not detailed |
| Whether past choices persist | Not stated in the listing beyond the dynasty continuing | Not stated in the listing | A chronicle of accumulated decisions, with consequences for later heirs (official site) |
Choosing between them
- If you want a political problem that spans centuries, the Crusader Kings III listing points most directly to heirs, traits, and inherited genetics within a historical setting.
- If you want leadership turnover at empire scale, Old World’s description of aging and dying leaders across generations fits that goal, though its inheritance rules are not documented here.
- If you want the family record itself to be the game, Bloodweight’s chronicle of decisions and heirs with their own wills is the most direct match.
What these descriptions can and cannot establish
The Crusader Kings III and Old World claims come from their Steam store pages, and the Bloodweight claims come from its official site. These sources show how each game presents itself. They do not establish historical accuracy, current mechanics after later updates, or how players received the games. Store copy changes over time, so check the current listing before relying on any detail above.

Search phrasing readers use
People looking for this kind of game often phrase the need in plain terms, such as “games where you play as a dynasty,” “strategy games with heirs and succession,” or “games where your choices affect the next generation.” These are useful search phrasings for finding titles, not measured search-volume data.
