The sticking point is Google Gemini: not simply its ability to answer questions, but its ability to connect supported Google services and help move a task from one app to another. That can make replacing Gmail, Calendar, or other services one by one feel different from replacing the workflow that ties them together.
Why Gemini can be harder to replace than an individual Google app
In an August 19, 2026 article, Android Police’s Parth Shah described Gemini as the main obstacle to his move from Google to Proton. His point was about connected workflows: Gemini can help retrieve information from one service and hand it off to another. Shah reported that Proton’s individual services worked adequately for him, while coordinating work across services was harder. That is one author’s experience, not a survey or a measured comparison. The distinction is between replacing apps and replacing a bridge. A separate email, calendar, or storage app may cover a particular task; it does not necessarily reproduce an assistant’s ability to find information in one place and help act on it somewhere else.
What Gemini Connected Apps can do
Google says, “Gemini Apps can connect to other apps to complete your request and give you more helpful responses.” Depending on supported apps and actions, examples include summarizing Gmail, creating calendar events, searching productivity apps, finding media, messaging, and controlling supported devices. Some actions require user permission. Google’s Connected Apps help page describes the feature and its controls.

Think of the benefit as a sequence rather than a single chatbot answer: locate relevant information, use it to complete a request, and, where the integration supports it, initiate a next step. Whether that sequence is useful depends on the exact apps and actions in your routine; the feature does not mean Gemini can act across every service or perform every requested task.
Check whether your own Gemini setup has the connections you rely on
Connected Apps availability varies by Gemini app, device, country, language, and other factors. Personal-account access can also depend on sign-in and settings, so Google’s general feature description does not guarantee that a particular connection appears for you. Check Google’s current availability and account guidance, then inspect Connected Apps in the Gemini app you actually use.

- List the handoffs you use. For example, do you ask an assistant to find information in email and then create a calendar event? Write down the source app, the result you need, and the destination action.
- Inspect Connected Apps. In Gemini, open Settings and help, then Connected Apps. The exact labels or availability may differ by app or device; use Google’s current help page if the path does not match your interface.
- Verify each action, not just each app. Confirm that the relevant app is connected and that Gemini can perform the specific retrieval or action you need. A connection does not establish that every function is supported.
- Review account and permission settings. Check that you are signed into the account you intend to use and understand the permissions requested before enabling an integration.
- Test a representative task. Try a low-risk version of a common handoff and confirm the result in the destination app. Do not assume a workflow works merely because the app is listed.
What Proton’s Lumo documentation establishes—and what it does not
Proton’s support page describes Lumo as an assistant for tasks such as answering questions, helping write messages, summarizing content, and explaining technical concepts. That is a limit of what the page establishes, not proof that Proton has no integrations or that Lumo cannot do more. Do not treat a general-purpose assistant as a like-for-like replacement for a specific sequence of cross-app actions without verifying that sequence in the current products.

Base the decision on the work you would lose or need to do differently, rather than on an abstract comparison of ecosystems. For each recurring workflow, ask:
- Where is the information? Identify the services that hold the messages, events, files, or other details you need.
- Can the assistant retrieve it? Verify access to the relevant information, including any account or permission requirements.
- Can it complete the handoff? Check whether it can create, send, or otherwise initiate the next action in the destination app—not just summarize or draft.
- Does it work on your setup? Account, device, location, language, app, and settings can affect availability.
- What privacy trade-offs are acceptable? Review the providers’ current explanations of data handling and the controls available on your account rather than assuming the products handle data identically.
If several essential routines depend on Gemini’s supported handoffs and those connections are available on your setup, losing that coordination may be a real switching cost. If you mostly use standalone services or are comfortable carrying out the handoff yourself, the gap may matter less. Google’s plan page lists Gemini benefits for paid plans in the US, but availability and eligibility vary; it does not establish that a paid plan is required for every Connected Apps workflow.
