Judges typically look for a strong idea, skilled execution, a good experience in the chosen medium, and credible evidence of impact. There is no single scoring formula across awards: criteria and weightings vary by program and category, so the specific award’s current rules matter.
What award judges assess
Idea, insight and relevance
Judges want to understand the problem or audience insight behind the work, why the idea is distinctive, and why it matters to the people it is meant to reach. Cannes Lions Design describes its aim as recognizing creativity, innovation and craftsmanship used to solve problems, engage audiences, shape brands and create impact. In Creative Data, data should be integral to the concept and its measurable impact, not merely a supporting detail. Cannes Lions Design criteria and Creative Data criteria explain those category-specific expectations.
Execution and craft
A compelling idea still has to be delivered well. The Webby Awards’ criteria consider whether an experience is engaging, relevant and memorable, and whether it is implemented appropriately for its medium. Technical problems that obstruct the experience can weaken the work, however original the concept may be. The Webby Awards’ judging criteria describe its category-specific approach.
Function and audience experience
For websites, the Webby criteria include content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, innovation and overall experience. Design awards may also assess whether a digital product’s design helps people use it, rather than treating visual appearance as the sole measure of success. Match the evidence in an entry to the kind of work being judged: an effective campaign, a usable product and a digital experience may require different demonstrations of quality.

Results tied to objectives
Impact matters when it is connected to what the work set out to do. Cannes Lions’ 2026 Design criteria assign 20% to results, while its 2026 Creative Data criteria allocate 20% to data-driven results and ask entrants to show tangible outcomes tied to objectives. Those are category-specific weightings, not a universal formula. Cannes’ entry guidance also asks for verifiable proof and context that helps an international jury understand the insight and significance of the result.
Meaningful innovation
Technology is not innovative merely because it is new or prominent in the entry. The Webby criteria ask whether an idea is meaningfully new, whether the technology works, and whether it changes how technology may be used. Their guidance says: “When AI is used, it should enhance creativity or usability, solve real problems and be applied with integrity.” A technology choice should therefore have a clear role in the idea or experience.
How scoring differs by award and category
Published criteria show why entrants should avoid assuming that one rubric applies everywhere. These figures describe the specified programs and categories:

|---|---|---|
| Cannes Lions 2026 Design | 40% idea; 40% execution; 20% results | Applies to the 2026 Design criteria, not all Cannes Lions categories. |
| Cannes Lions 2026 Creative Data | 20% creative idea/data solution; 30% data-driven strategy; 30% use of data; 20% data-driven results | A data-focused rubric for Creative Data, not a general awards scoring model. |
| Cannes Lions judging process | Around 10% of entries typically make the shortlist | The official process guidance describes this as typical, not a guaranteed annual rate. |
| The Webby Awards judging process | Five nominees, including one winner, per category; no more than 20% of entries can receive Official Honoree status | These are process caps, not an entrant’s predicted odds of recognition. |
Check the live category page before entering: criteria, eligibility and entry windows can change by program and year. For example, Cannes Lions’ 2026 Design rules set an execution window of 6 February 2025 through 9 April 2026 and require Product Design work to be available for purchase. Those requirements apply to that edition and category only. Cannes Lions Design rules
Choose the category that fits the work
Category fit is part of making a piece of work assessable. D&AD distinguishes digital marketing advertising—campaigns and communications primarily using technology, data and digital platforms—from Digital Design, which includes graphics, digital experiences and spaces. The Drum says its core criteria framework is interpreted and weighted differently by discipline and category. Review each program’s category definitions rather than choosing a label based only on the tools used.
When comparing categories or awards, check their scope, published criteria and weights, required evidence, whether the work is judged chiefly as advertising or design, eligibility dates and geography, and judging process. D&AD’s award categories and The Drum’s awards information provide starting points; confirm the current entry rules for the specific competition.

What to include in a strong entry
Build the case so a judge can follow the connection from the need to the outcome. Use the entry narrative and any case film to make the work understandable, but treat presentation as a way to clarify evidence—not a replacement for it.
- State the problem and insight. Explain who the work was for, what need or opportunity it addressed, and why that context mattered.
- Describe the idea. Make clear what was distinctive and how it answered the problem. If data or technology was central, show its role in the idea rather than listing it as a feature.
- Show the execution. Demonstrate how the work operated in its medium, what choices shaped the experience, and how the final implementation served the intended audience.
- Connect results to the objective. Provide verifiable evidence and identify the baseline, period, audience and market where relevant. Explain why the outcome matters in context.
- Make claims proportionate to proof. Do not imply that the work caused an outcome unless the evidence supports that link, or claim novelty on its own as proof of effectiveness.
How judging processes differ
The Webby Awards says Associate Academy Members independently inspect entries, with each entry evaluated by multiple members against criteria specific to its category. Executive Academy members then assess shortlists and vote. Cannes Lions describes an initial jury review of the shortlist, selection of Bronze, Silver and Gold by a two-thirds majority, and a Grand Prix chosen from Gold winners. Its process also includes conflict-of-interest exclusions and compulsory bias-awareness training. Because the procedures differ, entrants should follow the relevant award’s published process rather than assume every jury works the same way. Webby judging criteria and Cannes Lions judging process
