At a modeled pace of 2.5 hours of viewing per day, streaming the full list one service at a time is estimated to cost $773 with ads over 71 months or $1,138 ad-free over 64 months. Those are U.S.-oriented estimates published by Jared Newman in PCWorld on October 1, 2026—not fixed bills or current checkout quotes. Paying for all the listed services at once would instead cost about $98 per month with ads or $144.49 per month ad-free, plus a $30 direct purchase for one title.

What the estimate covers

The list is The New York Times’ “The 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century,” a ranked selection created with input from hundreds of stars, showrunners, and other industry insiders. The Times revealed 20 titles a day over five days beginning September 21, 2026. It is an informed, curated poll—not an objective measurement of television quality. PCWorld’s October 1, 2026 analysis used JustWatch to check U.S. availability and TMDB developer tools to organize title information.

PCWorld’s figures are scenario calculations based on the services and availability it listed. Rights, plan prices, ad tiers, and season availability can change, and availability may differ by country. Check a show’s current options and the service’s checkout price before subscribing.

Two ways to pay: subscribe all at once or rotate services

Access to nearly the whole list at once

PCWorld estimated a combined monthly cost of $98 for its ad-supported lineup or $144.49 for its ad-free lineup, in either case plus $30 to buy “Louie” directly. The listed subscriptions and services covered 99 of the 100 titles; “Louie” was the exception. These totals are the article’s 2026 calculation, not a synchronized quote for today’s plans.

Watch service by service

Rotating subscriptions can avoid paying every monthly fee at once, but it takes longer. PCWorld modeled the cost of subscribing to services in turn, allowing enough time to watch the titles available on each, rather than maintaining every subscription simultaneously. For the 2.5-hour daily scenario, that produced the $773-with-ads and $1,138-ad-free estimates above.

The modeled total viewing time was 4,842 hours with ads or 4,325 hours ad-free across the service catalog calculations. These are estimated runtime totals, not an independently verified audit of every episode or season. PCWorld’s 2.5-hours-per-day scenario uses its cited average-American viewing assumption; treat that as a modeling input, not a personal recommendation or a guarantee of how long your own watch-through will take.

How long and how much at different viewing paces

PCWorld’s estimates change substantially with daily viewing time. Each row is a modeled service-rotation scenario from its October 2026 analysis, not an all-at-once subscription bill.

Daily viewing assumption With ads Ad-free
1 hour $1,770 over 13 years, 10 months $2,654 over 12 years, 4 months
2.5 hours $773 over 71 months $1,138 over 64 months
4 hours $509 over 3 years, 11 months $751 over 3 years, 7 months
8 hours $302 over 2 years, 4 months $437 over 2 years, 2 months

These are PCWorld’s calculated costs and durations for its modeled catalog and service sequence. Faster viewing can reduce how many months of subscriptions the model requires; it does not mean the titles become available on one service or that every season is necessarily included.

Rank #3

Which services account for the most titles?

PCWorld’s service-count table reported the following number of list titles by service or bundle. Counts describe that article’s availability snapshot, not a guarantee of complete seasons or current access.

Service or bundle Titles reported
HBO Max 35
Disney+ and Hulu 26
Netflix 20
Paramount+ 11
Peacock 8
Prime Video 8
BritBox 5
Roku Channel 4
Apple TV 3
Hoopla 3
AMC+ 2

HBO Max had the largest single-service count in this snapshot. A larger count does not automatically make it the cheapest choice for a particular viewer: the right comparison depends on the shows you want, the plan tier, whether ads are acceptable, and how quickly you intend to watch.

Why your total may differ

  • You may not want all 100 shows. The estimates target the full list. If you care about only a subset, check those titles first rather than treating the full-list total as your likely spend.
  • Availability may be partial. PCWorld’s table noted season limitations for some shows, so a service count is not proof that every season is included.
  • Bundles can alter the math. PCWorld notes that combining Disney services with HBO Max, or Peacock with Apple TV, can produce savings. Its one-at-a-time model kept some services separate where that was cheaper for its scenario; a bundle that reduces the monthly price may not be the lowest-cost sequence for every viewer.
  • Ad plans affect both price and runtime assumptions. PCWorld adjusted ad-supported viewing using August 2026 Ampere data reported by Business Insider. Because Roku-specific ad-load data was unavailable, it assumed Roku Channel’s ad load was similar to Tubi’s. Actual ad breaks can vary.
  • Prices and rights move. Availability and checkout prices can change between the October 2026 snapshot and your decision, as well as by region and plan.

How to check availability before subscribing

  1. Search for the specific show in a streaming availability guide such as JustWatch’s U.S. guide.
  2. Filter by services you already have, then compare the listed streaming, free, rental, and purchase options for the show.
  3. Open the service’s own listing to confirm the season coverage, ad tier, regional availability, and price at checkout.
  4. Repeat for the titles you actually plan to watch, then decide whether to keep, rotate, or bundle subscriptions.

JustWatch identifies services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, and Freevee as examples of free ad-supported viewing. Free options are title-specific and include ads; they do not make the full list free.

Price context for checking a current quote

As a separate date-stamped comparison, Tom’s Guide’s 2026 pricing guide reported HBO Max at $10.99 monthly with ads, $18.49 ad-free, or $22.99 Premium; Prime Video at $8.99 monthly standalone with ads and $3 more for ad-free, with Prime at $14.99 monthly or $139 yearly; Paramount+ at $8.99 Essential or $13.99 Premium; Peacock at $10.99 Premium, $16.99 Premium Plus, or $7.99 Select; and Apple TV at $12.99 monthly. Disney+/Hulu bundle prices vary by ad tier. These are Tom’s Guide’s reported figures, not the same price inputs as PCWorld’s cost model; verify current rates with each service before relying on them.
