No official source publishes a 2026 price for building an MCP server, and this article does not offer a market-wide figure. The only dollar amount in the official material is a narrow Amazon Web Services example of about $1.80 per month to run one low-volume gateway configuration, and it says nothing about development labor. A defensible budget starts from scope, then prices one-time engineering, hosting, model inference and upstream API usage as separate lines.
Why there is no published build price
OpenAI’s build guidance treats an MCP server as a service that exposes live data or controlled tools. You build it with an SDK (TypeScript and Python are documented) and deploy it on infrastructure you manage. The size of that work depends on how many tools you expose, which systems sit behind them and how much production hardening you need. None of the official sources cited here gives representative development hours or labor rates for MCP work, so a “typical” build price cannot be sourced from them.
Splitting the budget
Keep these cost buckets as separate lines. A single monthly total hides which assumption drives it, and the buckets behave differently: implementation labor is largely one-time, while maintenance, hosting and usage recur.

| Gateway or serverless hosting | Deployment pattern, request volume, execution duration, logging, storage, network transfer | One illustrative AWS example for one configuration at one traffic level (see below). |
| Custom container or Runtime hosting | Container build, runtime configuration, traffic | Not priced in the source. AWS says Runtime carries different charges (see below). |

Reading the AWS example
AWS’s implementation guide for AgentCore Gateway does not state a publication date. It models a deployment that wraps existing Lambda functions and handles 100 tool invocations per day, or 3,000 per month. The cost breakdown is:

| Component | Monthly amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure | $1.75 | Presented as one figure covering API Gateway, the orchestration Lambda, DynamoDB, CloudWatch, S3 and execution of the target Lambda. |
| AgentCore Gateway consumption | $0.05 | Gateway charge within the same model. |
| Total | $1.80 | Illustrative for this configuration and volume only. |
AWS states that costs vary with deployment method, target type and usage, and that external API charges and custom container hosting may be additional. Two consequences follow. The figure is a reference point for one architecture at one traffic level, not a bill to expect. And it does not carry over to a custom container: AWS says the Runtime approach incurs different charges. Dividing $1.80 by 3,000 calls gives $0.0006 per call, but that arithmetic describes only this example and should not be used to price other volumes.
Model inference is a separate bill
If your server or the agent using it calls a model, that spending is a different bill. Anthropic’s pricing documentation for Claude Platform on AWS converts model usage priced in US dollars into Claude Consumption Units (CCUs) at $0.01 per CCU, and reports that usage to AWS Marketplace hourly. This is model-consumption billing, not an MCP hosting charge. The same page describes a 1.1x geographic multiplier that applies to specified newer Claude models when US inference geography is used. The page does not state a publication year, so treat these terms as current only as of when you read them.

Deployment pattern changes the estimate
Where the server runs changes both the labor and the recurring bill. OpenAI’s deployment guidance lists wrapper or gateway setups, serverless functions, edge workers, containers and traditional application infrastructure as viable categories. It advises comparing them on runtime and dependency support, streaming, cold-start and latency, network access, data residency and compliance, secret management, observability, and rollback and versioning. AWS documents two AgentCore approaches, compared below.
| Pattern | What you build | Effect on labor | Effect on recurring cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gateway wrapping existing Lambda functions, APIs or external MCP servers (AgentCore Gateway) | Gateway configuration and tool definitions over systems you already run | Can reduce custom server code when the functions or APIs already exist. AWS does not quantify this saving. | Priced in the AWS example, under its stated assumptions. |
| Custom containerized MCP server on AgentCore Runtime | A container that implements the server | More code, container build and target integration work | Different charges from the Gateway example. Not priced in the source. |
| Serverless function, edge worker or traditional application hosting | Server code on your chosen platform | Depends on runtime support, streaming and any session handling | Not stated in official guidance. Price from the platform’s own rate card. |
What the build covers
OpenAI’s guidance says to define tools around distinct user actions, with action-oriented names, clear descriptions, input and output schemas, safety annotations, and handlers that authorize and perform each operation. A budget should account for the work areas below. The list is a budgeting framework drawn from the documented implementation and production steps; the sources do not attach hours to any item.

Protocol version and SDK compatibility
The MCP release dated 2026-07-28 moved the protocol core toward stateless request and response operation. The release describes this as making MCP a standard HTTP workload that can run on serverless and edge infrastructure without session-management workarounds. It also formalizes extensions such as MCP Apps and Tasks, and it updates authorization. David Soria Parra, co-inventor of MCP, called the release “a leap in serving scalable MCP servers” in the announcement.
According to the announcement, the four Tier 1 SDKs speak the 2026-07-28 version as follows:

Two budget consequences follow. A new server built on the stateless design may need less session-handling code, though the release does not quantify that saving. An existing server that depends on session identifiers needs a migration line item. The release also describes the legacy HTTP+SSE transport as deprecated, with a year-long offramp.
Connectivity and data handling
OpenAI’s MCP connector guide distinguishes public remote servers from private servers connected through Secure MCP Tunnel, and it advises users to consider which server operator receives shared data. If your server must sit behind private connectivity or handle regulated data, add architecture work and a data-handling review. The official sources do not price either.

How to build a defensible estimate
- Write the scope. List the tools, the upstream APIs, which tools write data, how users authenticate and which clients must connect.
- Choose the deployment pattern. Use the comparison above to choose between a gateway over existing targets, a custom runtime and conventional hosting.
- Estimate labor per work area. Apply your own team’s rates to the work areas above. No published benchmark is available to substitute.
- Price hosting from the current rate card. For AWS, AWS describes its Pricing MCP Server as a natural-language bridge to the AWS Price List API for current and historical prices and availability. Attach the traffic, execution duration, logging and storage assumptions behind each rate.
- Add model and upstream API lines. Keep them separate, and record the model, inference geography and Marketplace terms you assumed.
- Check protocol and SDK compatibility. Confirm that each client and SDK you depend on supports 2026-07-28, and budget migration if any server or client relies on session identifiers.
- State the uncertainty. Present the estimate as a range, name each assumption, and flag which lines have no published figure behind them.
