The Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is a standard for describing files with metadata—such as a title, description, keywords, author, or copyright information—and carrying that information with digital content. It is a framework, not a standalone app or a file format: its data model defines metadata statements, while XML serialization records those statements and file-format rules determine how XMP is stored in a particular file.
What XMP means
Adobe describes XMP as file-labeling technology that lets people and applications capture, share, and update information about digital content. The metadata can help identify, organize, and manage an asset across a workflow. For example, an image may have a title and keywords, while a document may include author and copyright details.
XMP is designed as an extensible, format-neutral framework. That does not mean every program understands every property, or that every file format stores metadata in the same way. Support and preservation depend on the application and the format’s implementation.
The three layers of XMP
It helps to distinguish the metadata model from its representation and from the way a file carries it. These are related, but not interchangeable.

1. The data model
The model describes the forms of statements that can be made about a resource, such as a title or creator. ISO 16684-1:2019 defines the XMP data model and a set of core properties intended for use across a broad range of file formats and subject areas.
2. The serialization
Serialization records an instance of the model as XML. Adobe’s documentation describes the serialized representation in terms of RDF. In other words, the model defines what the metadata means structurally; serialization provides a way to express that metadata in data.

3. Storage in a file or sidecar
An application or workflow can embed XMP in a supported file, or keep it in a separate sidecar file. Adobe’s specifications address packet packaging, embedding in particular formats, and reconciliation when metadata also exists in another representation. Those format-specific details are separate from the core model.

The current confirmed first-part edition is ISO 16684-1:2019, titled Graphic technology — Extensible metadata platform (XMP) — Part 1: Data model, serialization and core properties. ISO lists it as Edition 2, published in April 2019; the record says it was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current. The earlier ISO 16684-1:2012 edition is withdrawn.

Part 1 defines the data model, XML serialization, and core properties. It does not specify how XMP packets must be embedded in every file format, nor does it define all domain-specific properties. Those distinctions matter: citing the core standard alone does not establish that a particular program will read, display, or preserve a particular field.
How XMP is used in digital workflows
Metadata can travel with content through creation, organization, and exchange. Adobe says XMP can be embedded in formats including JPEG and PDF, and metadata may also be stored in sidecar files. When a workflow has more than one metadata representation, conflicts or differences may need to be reconciled rather than assumed to update automatically.

Adobe organizes its specification documentation by these separate concerns:
- Part 1: the basic data model and serialization.
- Part 2: additional properties, including general-purpose and application-specific schemas.
- Part 3: storage in files, packet packaging, format embedding, and reconciliation with other metadata representations.
For a format-specific question, consult the relevant storage guidance as well as the application’s documentation. XMP’s interoperability goal is not a guarantee of identical behavior across every tool.

Adobe provides the XMP Toolkit SDK for integrating XMP functionality into software. It also documents an XMP Metadata UI SDK for customizing metadata display in Creative Cloud applications. The appropriate resource depends on whether the task is reading or writing metadata in an application, or changing metadata presentation in a Creative Cloud interface.
