WorldCoin’s proof-of-personhood system is World ID (also presented in current World materials as the Proof of Human credential). It is intended to let an online service verify that a user is a real, unique human without receiving ordinary identity details such as a name or birth date. The highest-assurance enrollment is completed in person at a World Orb and managed through World App.

“Worldcoin” is often used as an umbrella term, but the components are different: World ID is the credential and protocol, the Orb is the enrollment device, World App is the application, and WLD is a separate cryptocurrency token.

What each part of the system does

Component Role
World ID / Proof of Human A credential and protocol for proving a human-related claim, especially that someone is a unique human.
Orb A specialized device used for in-person enrollment. It captures eye and face imagery and performs World’s human and uniqueness checks.
World App The mobile application through which a person receives and uses a World ID credential.
WLD A separate digital token; holding or receiving WLD is not the same thing as having World ID.

How enrollment works

1. Visit an Orb

For the high-assurance Proof of Human credential, World’s help material describes an in-person Orb process. The device captures images of the user’s eyes and face and runs checks intended to determine whether the person is human and has not enrolled previously.

2. Iris information supports uniqueness checks

World says iris imagery is used to help establish that one person has not created multiple credentials. This is a uniqueness check, not a conventional civil-identity check: the stated objective is to distinguish one human from another in the credential system rather than identify the person by legal name.

  • Fast 0.5s 360° Recognition - Capacitive fingerprint technology supports quick authentication in about 0.5 seconds. 360° touch recognition helps read your fingerprint from different angles for faster, smoother daily login.
  • Compact Scanner for PC & Laptop + Multi-User Support - Small, lightweight USB design works well for desktops, laptops, office PCs and shared home computers without built-in fingerprint sensors. Supports multiple Windows accounts and up to 10 fingerprints per user account. Smart-ID security helps protect saved passwords and encrypted folders with fingerprint access.
  • Important Notes — Please Read Before Purchase - Support for Win10/11 32/64 bit original system. Not fit for the streamlined version. The Lite version has trimmed the biometric component, the fingerprint login device will not be able to recognize the Hello fingerprint option. It merely supports Windows Hello, does not fit for encrypting USB drives/files, and can merely support Windows system. It is recommended to prioritize plugging into the USB 2.0 interface of the motherboard. USB 3.0 docking stations are prone to power supply/interference and unstable recognition.

3. Face imagery supports Face Auth

World says face imagery is used for Face Auth, a safeguard intended to help ensure that the person using a credential is the person who enrolled. Face Auth addresses account use after enrollment; it is separate from the iris-based uniqueness purpose.

4. Receive the credential in World App

After the relevant verification is completed, the user receives a World ID credential through World App. The credential is designed to let a relying service verify a claim about the user without being given the user’s ordinary civil identity.

How a website verifies World ID

World describes a zero-knowledge-proof flow based on the Semaphore protocol. In broad terms, the user proves control of a secret associated with a valid credential-set entry. The proof can show that the person is eligible—for example, that they are a verified unique human—without revealing which entry they control or exposing the underlying identity commitment.

  • Small form factor
  • Metal Casing resists unintentional movement.
  • SuperiorRed "Flash" indicates that a fingerprint image has been captured, 512 dpi / 8-bit grayscale (256 gray levels) ESD resistance
  • Encrypted fingerprint data

World’s stated design goal is that separate application uses cannot be linked back to the user’s iris code through the proof. A relying service therefore receives a cryptographic result about eligibility rather than the biometric image or an ordinary identity profile.

What “anonymous” does and does not mean

In World’s technical model, a World ID proof can minimize what an application learns: the application may receive a yes-or-no human or uniqueness result without receiving a name, birth date, iris image or the credential’s identifying entry. That is the privacy property claimed for the proof protocol.

It is not a blanket promise that every part of the service is anonymous. Enrollment, account recovery, device operation, consent, data transfers, customer support, governance and lawful processing are separate questions. A zero-knowledge proof limits information disclosed in a particular verification transaction; it does not by itself determine what happens to information collected elsewhere in the system or whether an organization complies with every applicable law.

Does World store an iris scan?

World’s current product and privacy materials say biometric processing is carried out on the Orb and that iris-derived information is split into randomized or encrypted fragments handled through multi-party computation. Its whitepaper describes World ID proofs as unlinkable to biometric data and the iris code. These are World’s descriptions of its technical design and privacy model.

The practical privacy question is broader than whether a finished image is retained. It includes what the Orb captures, what is transmitted, how fragments and derived information are governed, how recovery works, who can access operational records, what consent is obtained, and how deletion requests are handled. Those issues require examining the applicable policy, implementation and regulator findings rather than inferring a complete answer from the cryptographic proof alone.

Regulatory actions have differed by date and jurisdiction, so they should not be turned into a universal statement about World’s current legal status.

Spain: precautionary action in March 2024

In March 2024, Spain’s data-protection authority, the AEPD, ordered a precautionary cessation of the collection and processing of personal data in Spain and the blocking of data already collected. The authority said the temporary measure could last no more than three months.

Bavaria/Germany: findings reported in December 2024

In December 2024, the AEPD reported that Bavaria’s data-protection authority had found GDPR infringements and ordered corrective measures. The measures described included deletion of stored iris codes, explicit consent for future biometric processing and a right to erasure.

Company-role statement reproduced in a 2026 AEPD document

A 2026 AEPD document reproduces a company update stating that, as of October 2025, Tools for Humanity GmbH was the sole controller for Orb-related processing in Spain and that the Worldcoin Foundation remained steward of the World ID protocol. Because this appears as reproduced company communication in a regulator document, it should be attributed to the company and dated rather than treated as an independent finding.

What World ID proves—and what it does not

  • It can be used to prove: a human-related claim defined by the credential, such as membership as a verified unique human, when a service accepts World ID.
  • It is designed not to disclose: the user’s name, birth date, iris image or the specific credential-set entry in an ordinary zero-knowledge verification.
  • It does not automatically prove: legal identity, age unless an appropriate age claim is issued and accepted, citizenship, location, employment, trustworthiness or authorization for a particular service.
  • It does not remove trust requirements: users still depend on the operators, software, hardware, governance and legal processes surrounding enrollment and recovery.

Questions to ask before using it

  1. What exact claim does the service need? Confirm whether it wants uniqueness, humanity, age or another attribute.
  2. What data is collected during enrollment and recovery? Read the current product and privacy information for your jurisdiction, not just the proof-flow description.
  3. Who operates each layer? Separate the Orb operator, World App, World ID protocol steward and the service requesting the proof.
  4. What can you delete or revoke? Check the available erasure, credential-reset and account-recovery controls before enrolling.
  5. Is the service lawful and available where you live? Availability and regulatory status can change by country and over time.

How to compare World ID with another identity method

A meaningful comparison should use the same criteria for every system:

  • Assurance and enrollment burden: whether enrollment is remote or in person and how strongly it attempts to prevent duplicate accounts.
  • Information disclosed to applications: whether a service receives a binary eligibility result, attributes, civil identity or persistent identifiers.
  • Biometric and recovery exposure: what is captured, where processing occurs, how recovery works and what can be erased.
  • Governance: which companies, foundations, operators or open protocols control the system.
  • User controls: whether credentials can be revoked, deleted or reissued and under what conditions.
  • Jurisdictional status: whether enrollment and use are permitted and supported in the user’s country.

Bottom line

World ID is a credential and zero-knowledge verification system intended to let services recognize a unique human without receiving ordinary identity details. Its highest-assurance credential is issued after in-person Orb enrollment, with iris-related processing aimed at uniqueness and face imagery used for Face Auth. Those are technical design claims, not a complete guarantee about data governance, consent, security or legal compliance. Evaluate the current rules and controls for your jurisdiction before enrolling.
