Windows Connect Now (WCN) is Microsoft’s Windows implementation of Wi-Fi Alliance wireless setup technology. It helps compatible access points and devices—such as PCs, printers and cameras—discover one another and exchange settings to make network setup easier. Microsoft describes WCN as intended for home and small-business networks, not enterprise deployments.
What do WCN, WPS and WSC mean?
These names refer to related but distinct things. WCN is Microsoft’s implementation and Windows API layer; WPS and WSC are names for the underlying Wi-Fi configuration specification family developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Microsoft says the version 1.0h specification was called Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), while version 2 was called Wi-Fi Simple Configuration (WSC). Microsoft documentation uses WPS and WSC interchangeably unless it specifies otherwise. Microsoft’s WCN overview explains the implementation, while its WCN portal covers the terminology and API.
What does Windows Connect Now do?
WCN provides ways for Windows applications and compatible devices to find each other and exchange information needed for configuration or connectivity. Microsoft’s examples include access points, printers, cameras, PCs, mobile devices and embedded devices. The aim is to simplify setup for home and small-business users; that is Microsoft’s stated positioning, not an independent assessment of security or suitability for every network.

Applications and the WCN API
Windows applications can use the WCN API with the Function Discovery API to search for compatible devices. A search can be narrowed by SSID, device state or category, or broadened to include all WCN-capable devices. After discovering a device, an application can communicate with it to support configuration or connection. Microsoft’s API reference includes methods such as IWCNDevice::Connect, SetPassword, GetNetworkProfile and SetNetworkProfile, as well as session-completion callbacks. These are developer-facing interfaces, rather than ordinary Windows settings for routine network use. See the WCN API overview.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Administrative commands
Microsoft also documents netsh wcn commands for querying, enrolling and exporting WCN settings. The documented operations include:
queryto query WCN information;enrollto begin WPS enrollment with a device identified by its enrollee UUID; anddumpto export current WCN settings as a script.
These are command-line administration capabilities, not a general-purpose replacement for configuring a network through Windows or an access point’s own controls. Microsoft’s command reference lists applicability to Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025, among other platforms. That list describes the documented command page; it should not be conflated with the broader availability of WCN technology. See Microsoft’s netsh wcn reference.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Is Windows Connect Now intended for every kind of network?
No. Microsoft explicitly says, “This technology is not intended for enterprise scenarios.” Its overview positions WCN for home and small-business networking. Organizations evaluating network onboarding should therefore not treat WCN as Microsoft’s enterprise provisioning solution merely because Windows exposes related APIs or commands. Read Microsoft’s statement on WCN’s intended use.

Microsoft’s WCN overview says support starts with Windows 7. Separately, the netsh wcn command reference lists specific newer Windows client and server releases. Those statements cover different scopes—the WCN technology/API and a particular command reference—so the command page’s platform list should not be used as a complete history of WCN support. What is the older USB flash-drive approach?
Microsoft’s previous-versions documentation describes earlier WCN approaches called WCN-NET, WCN-UFD and WCN-MTP. WCN-UFD used a USB flash drive to carry configuration files, and the documentation discusses workflows for Windows Vista and Windows XP. This is historical context, not evidence that USB-based provisioning is a current accessory recommendation. See Microsoft’s previous-versions Windows Connect Now documentation.
