Whonix is a free, open-source desktop operating system that runs inside virtual machines on a host computer. Its two-part design sends the Workstation’s internet traffic through Tor via a separate Gateway. It can help reduce some network and malware risks, but it does not guarantee anonymity: how you use it matters, and the project requires compatible virtualization software and hardware.
What “runs like an app” means
Whonix is not a browser extension or a single app window. You install or import it into a virtualization environment on a computer that already runs another operating system. You then start and use its virtual machines from that host. The Whonix Project describes the system as based on a hardened Debian/Kicksecure environment and Tor: Whonix overview.
The host operating system, virtualization software, and Whonix are separate layers. The host is the computer’s existing OS; the virtualization software runs virtual machines; and Whonix supplies the Gateway and Workstation within that environment.
How Whonix uses Tor
Gateway handles network traffic
The Whonix Gateway runs Tor processes and acts as the network gateway. The project says Whonix routes internet traffic through Tor.

Workstation runs your applications
The Workstation is where you use applications, on an isolated network connected through the Gateway. Separating network routing from everyday applications is intended to provide defense in depth and reduce some network and malware risks. It is a design aimed at limiting exposure, not proof that every leak or attack is prevented.
Does Whonix run on Windows, macOS, or Linux?
Whonix’s official download matrix lists VirtualBox, KVM, and Qubes pathways, and download options for host operating systems including Windows, Linux, and macOS. The listed combinations are not all equally mature or intended for the same use, so check the current matrix for the exact host, hypervisor, and status before choosing: Whonix download and platform matrix.

For a beginner-oriented VirtualBox route, the project’s installation instructions say to download the stable LXQt image, install VirtualBox, import the image, and start both the Gateway and Workstation. The page describes signature checking as optional and as an additional download-security measure useful to advanced users: VirtualBox installation instructions.
Hardware and virtualization requirements
For non-Qubes Whonix, the Whonix Project’s requirements page lists these minimums and recommendations. They are project requirements, not independent performance-test results; meeting the minimum does not mean every configuration will run well.

| Resource | Whonix Project requirement or recommendation |
|---|---|
| Free RAM | Minimum 1 GB, with Gateway RAM lowered to 256 MB |
| Free storage | Minimum 10 GB |
| CPU virtualization | AMD-V or Intel VT-x support |
| Performance | SSD and 8 GB RAM recommended; more RAM can help with multitasking |
These figures are from the Whonix Project’s system requirements page, reviewed October 4, 2026. Check that page and the platform matrix for current details before installing.

No operating system can guarantee that you will remain anonymous regardless of your actions. The Whonix Project cautions: “Whonix is a technological means to anonymity, but staying safe necessitates complete behavioral change; it is a complex problem without an easy solution.” Its Tor routing and isolation are intended protections, not a promise that users cannot be identified or that every threat is defeated. Read the project’s current guidance and consider your own threat model before relying on Whonix for sensitive activity: Whonix warnings.
