Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that lets people send money between bank accounts through a supported app or other access channel. The app is the interface, while the UPI PIN is the credential used to authorize a payment. NPCI describes UPI as operating over IMPS infrastructure.
What is UPI and how do instant bank-to-bank payments work?
UPI connects a payer’s bank account to a recipient’s bank account for a transfer. A supported app lets the payer choose a recipient and enter the payment details; UPI routes the transaction between the banks; the payer authorizes it with a UPI PIN; and the app and banks report the result. The app provides access to the payment system—it does not hold the bank-account balance.
To use UPI through an app, the customer registers and links a bank account. NPCI says the mobile number verified in the app must match the number linked to the bank account for the app to discover the account. Linked account details are retrieved in masked form. Available features and recipient details vary by app and bank.

- Set up access: Register in a UPI-enabled app and link an eligible bank account using the mobile number associated with that account.
- Address the payment: Choose a supported recipient method, such as a UPI ID (also called a virtual payment address, or VPA), a QR code, or another option offered by the app.
- Check the details: Confirm the recipient and amount in the payment screen before proceeding.
- Authorize: Enter the UPI PIN to authorize the bank transaction.
- Check the result: Review the confirmation or transaction status shown by the app. If confirmation is missing, NPCI advises checking the status and contacting the bank.
What you can pay for
UPI supports person-to-person transfers and merchant payments. It can also support a collect request, in which a recipient requests payment and the payer reviews and authorizes it. For online purchases, a shopper may select UPI, provide a payment address, receive a collect request in the app, and approve it there.

Is UPI available 24/7?
NPCI says UPI payments are instant and available 24/7, regardless of bank working hours. That describes the service’s stated availability; it is not a guarantee that every transaction will complete without delay or succeed. If a payment’s status is unclear, check the transaction status in the app and contact the bank if confirmation is still missing.
Do I need to register a beneficiary?
No. NPCI says you do not need to register a beneficiary for UPI transfers. You still need to select or enter the recipient using a method supported by your app, and you should verify the recipient and amount before authorizing the payment.

Is my UPI PIN the same as my bank MPIN?
No. NPCI distinguishes the UPI PIN from a bank-issued MPIN. The UPI PIN is a 4–6 digit passcode set during registration and used to authorize UPI bank transactions. Keep it private: NPCI says, “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone,” and states that bank customer support will never ask for it. Because the PIN authorizes a payment, never enter it just to receive money.

Not every UPI access method requires a smartphone. NPCI’s product booklet describes access over USSD for feature-phone users, though availability depends on participating members and the user’s access path. A smartphone app is one way to use UPI, not the definition of UPI itself.

What are UPI Tap & Pay and international UPI?
Tap & Pay
UPI Tap & Pay is an optional NFC-based method. With a supported app and NFC-capable phone or device, a user can tap an NFC-enabled tag or smart QR to capture the payee’s UPI ID or VPA. NFC is not required for ordinary scan-and-pay UPI.
International use
NPCI describes UPI Global Acceptance at select international merchant locations, not universal acceptance abroad. A user needs to activate the feature through a supported app or account, confirm that the merchant accepts UPI, and review the final amount in local and Indian currency, the exchange rate, and any fees. NPCI also describes UPI access for eligible non-resident Indians with NRE or NRO accounts and supported international mobile numbers, subject to bank terms.
