Twisted-pair cable contains two insulated conductors twisted together to form a pair. The twist helps reduce signal degradation and crosstalk; a cable may contain one pair or several. Twisted pair is commonly used for Ethernet, but it is a cable construction—not another name for Ethernet.
How twisted-pair cable works
Each pair consists of two insulated conductors wound around one another. When a signal travels through the pair, the conductors’ electrical effects tend to cancel some interference. This helps limit degradation from crosstalk and external electromagnetic or radio-frequency interference. The amount of twisting and the cable’s other construction details are controlled by the applicable specifications.
A networking cable may bundle multiple pairs. For example, Cisco describes unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) networking cable as eight insulated copper wires arranged in four pairs. The term “twisted pair” alone does not tell you the cable’s number of pairs, conductor gauge, category, impedance, shielding, jacket rating, or permitted application.
UTP and shielded twisted-pair cable
The main distinction is whether metallic shielding is part of the construction. UTP has twisted pairs but no metallic shield around them. Shielded or screened designs add foil, braid, or both, around individual pairs, the group of pairs, or both. Casual usage of shielding labels can vary, so check a cable’s specification to identify its actual construction.

- UTP: A common choice for Ethernet LAN cabling when the system design and environment permit it.
- Shielded or screened cable: May help reduce noise in an electrically challenging environment, depending on its construction and installation.
Shielding is not automatically an upgrade. It can add cost and installation complexity, and its effectiveness depends on compatible connectors and equipment, correct grounding and bonding, and continuous shield connections. Cisco warns that poor grounding or a discontinuity can undermine shielding and make a shielded cable behave like an antenna. The right choice depends on the environment and installation requirements, not just the presence of a shield.
How twisted pair relates to Ethernet
Ethernet is a family of networking technologies; twisted pair is one possible medium for carrying Ethernet signals. IEEE 802.3-2022 covers physical-layer interfaces for selected media that include twisted pair, coaxial cable, and fiber-optic cable. It also includes power over selected twisted-pair physical-layer types. Therefore, not every Ethernet link uses twisted pair, and a twisted-pair cable is not necessarily suitable for every Ethernet link.

- This unit is dual-use IP Network extender, it can be used by twisted pair wires, it also can be used by Cat5e/6 network cable. Transmission distance: up to 500 meters (1650FT.) through a Cat5e/6 network cable, Up to 300meters(1000FT) through one twisted pair (2 wires).
- Support 720P, 960P,1080P HD Network IP cameras. (Please take note: Not support PoE,The unit at camera side does not power up the camera)
- Compact design, Durable Metal. Bilateral heat dissipation.
- Support plug and play, and no setting of network terminating equipment, including web camera, needs to be changed
- Cost effective, It is simple to construct at a low cost, for full use can be made of the original coaxial cable, power line or telephone line for cabling; moreover, network installation cost can be reduced since communication media, such as Ethernet, needn’t be re-laid
As a practical example, Cisco’s connection guidance describes straight-through Cat5/Cat6 UTP patch cables for connecting an end-user device to a switch. That example does not establish that any Cat5 or Cat6 cable will meet the requirements of every link.

What to check when choosing a cable
Choose for the specific link and installation, rather than relying on “twisted pair” as the only specification. Check the following before buying or installing cable:

- Category and application: Confirm that the cable and installed channel meet the requirements of the Ethernet link or other application.
- Construction: Verify the pair count, shielding arrangement, and whether the conductors are solid or stranded if those details matter to the installation.
- Connectors and equipment: Make sure the cable and terminations are compatible with the devices and link.
- Environment: Consider electrical noise, routing, grounding and bonding requirements, and the appropriate jacket rating for the location.
- Reach: Check the permitted channel length for the specific Ethernet physical layer or other application. “Twisted pair” by itself does not specify a supported distance.
For a simple device-to-switch connection, a Cat 5 or Cat 6 UTP patch cable is one documented example; for a noisy or specialized installation, follow the equipment and cabling specifications and ensure the shielding can be correctly bonded. Category, construction, and installation all matter.

What is the difference between UTP and shielded twisted pair?
UTP has no metallic shield around its pairs. Shielded constructions add foil, braid, or both around pairs and/or the cable; their benefit depends on the installation and proper bonding.
