The Windows page file is disk space Windows uses to support committed memory and to store modified memory pages that are not frequently accessed. It works alongside RAM; it is not a substitute for physical memory. Windows manages its size by default, and the right configuration depends on memory use and crash-dump needs.

What the Windows page file does

Windows uses the page file to support its system commit limit and to make room in RAM by moving modified pages that are not frequently accessed to disk. The system commit limit is the total of physical RAM and all page files. Removing the page file can therefore lower how much memory Windows can commit. Microsoft explains these purposes and sizing factors.

The page file is commonly associated with pagefile.sys. Because it is disk-backed, it is much slower than RAM; it helps Windows manage memory but does not add physical memory or guarantee that memory-intensive work will run as quickly as it would with more RAM.

How Windows manages page-file size

Windows manages the page file by default. Its size can change based on installed RAM, system commit charge, and crash-dump requirements. Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 says a system-managed page file can have variable minimums and a maximum of three times RAM or 4 GB, whichever is larger. That describes the documented maximum for system-managed files, not a recommendation to set a custom file to that size.

#1 Best Overall

There is no universal page-file size calculated from RAM alone. Microsoft says sizing should account for peak system commit charge and the dump type configured on the computer. A fixed “1.5 times RAM” rule is not general guidance: Microsoft gives that initial size as a workaround for a specific slow-page-file-growth allocation issue in Windows 10. See Microsoft’s description of that issue and workaround.

How to decide whether to change the size

For most users, leaving the page file system-managed is a sensible default. Consider changing it only when you have a specific constraint or requirement, such as a known peak commit workload, limited disk space, or a crash-dump configuration that calls for a particular capacity. Before choosing a custom size, assess peak commit charge and the dump type rather than relying on a RAM multiplier.

  • If Windows reports memory or commit-limit problems: Removing or shrinking the page file can reduce the commit limit. Check whether the workload’s peak commit charge exceeds available capacity before changing settings.
  • If disk space is the concern: A smaller page file may free space, but it also reduces memory-commit headroom and can affect dump support. Weigh those trade-offs first.
  • If the page file appears full: That percentage alone does not establish a performance problem. Microsoft notes that interpretation depends on whether the system commit limit has been reached and whether significant memory is waiting to be written.

Page files and crash dumps

A page file or a dedicated dump file can provide storage used to write a system crash dump. The required capacity depends on the selected dump type. Microsoft’s memory-dump guidance cites a minimum of RAM plus 257 MB for a complete dump; complete dumps may also need additional space for headers and potential driver data. Automatic memory dumps allow Windows more flexibility to adjust page-file sizing for the configured dump. Consult Microsoft’s memory dump file options when selecting a dump type.

Page file or dedicated dump file?

A page file can support ordinary memory management and may also be used for crash-dump support. A dedicated dump file is reserved for crash dumps and is not used for normal paging. Microsoft says a dedicated dump file can be placed on a supported disk volume; see Microsoft’s configuration guidance.

Can you disable pagefile.sys?

Windows allows page-file configuration changes, but disabling the page file is not a generally safe optimization. It reduces the system commit limit and may prevent a configured crash dump from being written if no suitable dump storage remains. Unless you have measured your workload’s memory needs and accounted for dump requirements, keeping Windows’ system-managed page file is the safer choice.
