The Wee Noise Makers PGB-1 is a portable groovebox: a standalone instrument for making and sequencing music, with synth, sample, audio-effects and MIDI tracks. It also has a documented route for firmware customization, so it can appeal both to musicians who want a compact music-making workflow and to developers interested in experimenting with audio hardware.
What the PGB-1 does
Wee Noise Makers describes the PGB-1 as a portable music-production device. Its release 1.3.0 user manual organizes the instrument around tracks, steps, patterns, songs and samples. That makes it possible to build parts, sequence them, arrange them into songs, record or edit samples, and apply effects without treating the device as merely a MIDI controller.
The manual lists 16 tracks in total: six synth, two sample, three audio-effects and five MIDI tracks. Patterns can run for up to 256 steps using pattern linking, and a song can contain 12 parts. Those are capabilities documented by the manufacturer, not independent performance or sound-quality measurements.

Build and sequence parts
The PGB-1’s 16-step patterns provide the basic sequencing unit; pattern linking extends a sequence to as many as 256 steps. Synth and sample tracks handle sound-making, while MIDI tracks provide a way to sequence external MIDI equipment. The manual also documents built-in chord progressions, which can help when sketching harmonic material.

Arrange and perform
Song mode uses 12 song parts to organize material beyond a single repeating pattern. The manual also describes live effects, giving the device a performance-oriented workflow as well as a pattern-building one.
Record and edit samples
The two sample tracks and documented sample-recording and editing workflow let users incorporate recorded material into sequences. An internal microphone is listed in the product specifications, alongside a 3.5 mm audio line-in; consult the manual for the relevant recording workflow and connection details.

| Item | Manufacturer-listed specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Raspberry Pi RP2040 |
| Storage | 16 MB flash |
| Display | 128 × 64 monochrome OLED |
| Controls and lighting | 24 addressable RGB LEDs, 30 tactile switches and a capacitive touch strip |

| MIDI | 3.5 mm TRS Type-A MIDI input and output |
| Power | Rechargeable battery operation |
These details come from the Crowd Supply product specifications. The product information reviewed does not establish which cables or other accessories are included. In particular, check that any MIDI cable or adapter matches the PGB-1’s TRS Type-A connections rather than assuming a standard five-pin DIN cable will plug in directly. The manufacturer’s audio and MIDI manual section provides connection guidance.
What makes it interesting to developers
The PGB-1 is not limited to its stock music workflow. Wee Noise Makers publishes the firmware source code and offers a C/C++ SDK. The SDK announcement says developers can work with hardware features including the LEDs, keyboard, OLED screen, MIDI input and audio input/output.

- Compact and Portable Design: Professional music production tool with go-everywhere portability for creating music anywhere without clutter or complications
- Versatile Track Types: Includes Tone, Drum Kit, and Looper (Audio Loop) track types for diverse music production capabilities
- Comprehensive Connectivity Options: Connections include 1/4 inch phone jacks, MIDI and USB ports for seamless integration with other equipment
- Expandable Storage: SD card included for saving Project Data and Audio Data to preserve your creative work
- Flexible Power Options: Power with 4 AA batteries or USB for convenient use at home or on the go
The Noise Nugget SDK documentation describes installing firmware in UF2 format over USB. Firmware changes can replace the stock firmware and may erase projects and samples, so back up work before installing anything and follow the official installation instructions. This gives technically inclined users a customization path, but it does not mean every user needs to program the device to use it as an instrument.

In a May 12, 2026 project update, Wee Noise Makers described new hi-hat and sampler engines, LFO improvements, and menus for mixing and live effects. The same update said a new manual and a beta Sample Manager were available. The Sample Manager is a separate beta utility, not a firmware version; see the project update for the maker’s description.
Who the PGB-1 is for
- Musicians: Those who want a portable instrument for sequencing synths and samples, arranging song parts, recording samples and using live effects.
- Hardware and software tinkerers: Those interested in a device with published firmware source and a C/C++ SDK for accessing documented hardware features.
- People integrating external gear: Those who can use its MIDI input and output and account for the specified TRS Type-A connectors and compatible cabling.
Wee Noise Makers’ product page calls the PGB-1 “your gateway to the world of music production and audio synths.” That is the campaign’s description; more concretely, the device combines a documented groovebox workflow with published avenues for firmware development.
