The Thermonator is a quadruped robot carrying Throwflame’s ARC flamethrower. Ars Technica reported a launch price of $9,420 in April 2024—less than many used cars, but not a verified current price. Its reported fire range was 30 feet. Those figures describe reporting and product claims, not independent test results.
What is the Thermonator?
Ars Technica described the Thermonator as a four-legged robot with Throwflame’s ARC flamethrower mounted on its back. The article said the robot appeared to integrate a version of Unitree’s Go2, but it did not establish a confirmed parts list. A Go2 by itself is not the Thermonator and is not reported to include a flamethrower.
The distinction matters: the product is the combined robot, fire device, and reported control and navigation features—not simply a robot dog with a confirmed off-the-shelf bill of materials.

How much does the Thermonator cost?
Ars Technica reported a price of $9,420 when the product became available in April 2024. That is a dated launch-price report, not a current quote. An August 2026 iTechGuides article also reported a $9,420 listing and said it was in stock, but that secondary report does not verify Throwflame’s live price or availability. Is the Thermonator legal where you live?
There is no safe universal yes-or-no answer. Ars Technica’s April 2024 legal summary said flamethrowers were not specifically regulated in 48 U.S. states at that time, and noted restrictions in Maryland and California as well as the possible application of general liability and criminal laws. That dated summary is not a current legal determination for any specific location.
Before buying or possessing one, check current state and local laws, fire-code requirements, and any rules that apply to transport or use where you live. Laws and fire restrictions can change, and legality depends on jurisdiction and circumstances; the available reporting is not legal advice.

What to weigh before treating it as a novelty purchase
A flame-throwing robot combines a moving machine with a fire hazard. Fire can injure people, damage property, or spread beyond the intended area and start an uncontrolled fire. The reported price and feature list do not establish safe operation, suitability for a task, or permission to use it. Do not assume a use case advertised by the manufacturer is appropriate at a particular site.
