HPE’s third Spaceborne Computer iteration launched to the International Space Station on January 30, 2024, so it is not a new arrival. HPE describes the program as bringing edge computing, AI, and machine-learning capabilities to orbit. But the available sources do not establish that it is the most powerful computer ever sent to space: no comparable benchmark across space computers is provided.

What computer went to the ISS?

The system is part of Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Spaceborne Computer program, a collaboration with NASA to test commercial off-the-shelf computing hardware in the space environment. HPE says its third iteration flew on Northrop Grumman’s NG-20 resupply mission on January 30, 2024. The ISS National Laboratory announced the planned launch on January 23, 2024, and described the research context.

There is a naming wrinkle: HPE calls the 2024 system the program’s third iteration but also refers to it as Spaceborne Computer-2 (SBC-2). The name should not be taken to mean it was the second launch; HPE’s history records an earlier Spaceborne-1 mission in 2017 and Spaceborne Computer-2 in 2021.

What is it meant to do in orbit?

The project tests whether familiar enterprise computing systems can process data aboard the ISS. This is a form of edge computing: analysis takes place near where data is collected, rather than depending entirely on processing after data reaches Earth. HPE describes the 2024 iteration as expanding edge-computing, AI, and machine-learning capabilities for scientific workloads.

  • READY FOR CUSTOM PAINT FINISH - Molded in light gray plastic so you can paint and detail to your exact preferences for a museum-quality appearance. (Paint & glue required, not included.)

That can support experiments that benefit from analysis in orbit, but it does not mean ground-based analysis is replaced or that communications delays disappear. The system is a research platform for computing in space, not a claim that every step of an experiment can be handled onboard.

Why is ordinary computing hardware a challenge in space?

Space radiation can disrupt electronics, including by causing errors in computing systems. NASA Spinoff’s account of the first Spaceborne Computer mission describes an approach that used software techniques to detect or mitigate errors rather than relying solely on expensive radiation shielding. NASA Spinoff says Spaceborne-1 launched in 2017 and operated successfully for more than a year and a half.

Revell 1/72 Space Shuttle 40th Anniversary Model Kit for Building
  • Replica of the tile structure
  • Detailed cockpit
  • Cockpit canopy optionally removable
  • 2 crew figures
  • Opening cargo bay doors

Those details apply to the first mission. They should not automatically be treated as specifications or results for the later systems: the cited program history does not provide an equivalent operational-duration result for the 2024 iteration.

Is it really the most powerful computer ever sent to space?

That ranking is not established by the available evidence. HPE describes the Spaceborne system as operating at teraflop speeds, but its program page does not give a specific measured figure or a benchmark that can be compared consistently with every computer previously sent to space. A superlative in a headline is therefore not the same as a verified, like-for-like performance ranking.

LINKTOR Chemistry Molecular Model Kit (444 Pieces), Student or Teacher Set for Organic and Inorganic Chemistry Learning, Motivate Enthusiasm for Learning and Raising Space Imagination, A Fullerene Set
  • FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
  • TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
  • CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
  • EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

“Most powerful” also depends on what is being compared. A research computer aboard the ISS, a ground-based supercomputer, and a processor designed for a spacecraft have different locations and purposes. The cited sources do not provide a shared benchmark for ranking them.

How does it differ from NASA’s other computing projects?

System or program Where it is Purpose and distinction
HPE Spaceborne Computer International Space Station Tests onboard computing for research and edge-processing workloads. HPE’s program page describes teraflop speeds but supplies no directly comparable ranking benchmark. HPE program history

How the Spaceborne Computer program developed

  1. 2017 — Spaceborne-1: HPE and NASA sent the first system to the ISS. NASA Spinoff reports it operated successfully for more than a year and a half and describes its software-based response to radiation-related errors. NASA Spinoff’s mission history
  2. 2021 — Spaceborne Computer-2: HPE’s program history says the system launched to the ISS and was powered up in orbit. HPE’s program history
  3. January 30, 2024 — third iteration: HPE says the iteration launched aboard Northrop Grumman’s NG-20 resupply mission. The ISS National Laboratory’s January 23, 2024 announcement outlined the planned flight and research context.

HPE’s program history does not establish the latest system’s operational or return status as of October 4, 2026, so its current status should not be inferred from the launch date alone.
