The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold is Samsung’s book-style foldable smartphone family. It works as a phone when folded, with a cover display you can use while the device is closed, and it opens to a larger main display for viewing and multitasking. The name covers several generations, so any specification has to be tied to a named model before it means anything.
Folded and unfolded use
The design has two working modes. When the phone is closed, the cover screen handles everyday tasks such as notifications, messages, and quick app use, so you do not need to open the device for every interaction. When you unfold it, the main screen becomes a larger canvas intended for more expansive viewing and for running more than one app side by side.

That split is the practical difference from a conventional phone. A regular phone has one screen, and its size is fixed. A Galaxy Z Fold trades a thicker, heavier closed body for a second, larger display that appears when you open it. Whether that trade suits you depends on the model you choose, because the closed and open dimensions, weight, and screen sizes change from one generation to the next.

The original 2019 product was marketed as the Galaxy Fold. Later numbered models use the Galaxy Z Fold naming. Samsung’s official materials describe the product and its generations, but they do not explain what the letter “Z” stands for, so no meaning should be assumed. Treat “Galaxy Fold” and “Galaxy Z Fold” as product-family labels, and check the model number before comparing devices.

Why the family name is not a specification
Samsung’s own pages show that screen sizes differ between models. The table below lists the figures stated in the official sources cited in this article. Entries marked “not stated” were not given in those sources.
| Model | Cover display | Main display | Weight | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | 5.5-inch | 7.6-inch | 201 g | Samsung US product FAQ, as checked for this article |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | 6.5-inch | 8-inch | Not stated | Samsung US product page, as checked for this article |
| Galaxy Z Fold7 | 6.5-inch | 8.0-inch | Not stated | Samsung Electronics America specification sheet, information current as of July 9, 2025 |
| Original Galaxy Fold (2019) | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Samsung Electronics America specification sheet, October 25, 2019 |
The Fold7 and Fold8 figures are both Samsung’s, and they are not interchangeable. If you read a review or listing that quotes one generation’s screen size or weight and applies it to the whole family, treat that as a mismatch.
Galaxy Z Fold8: the current model
On Samsung’s US product page, as checked for this article, Galaxy Z Fold8 is presented as the current model in the family. Samsung’s stated details for that model include:

Samsung also distinguishes Fold8 from Fold8 Ultra, describing Fold8 as the lighter, more compact design. Fold8 Ultra is the model with the 8-inch main screen. Do not transfer Ultra figures to Fold8. These details are Samsung’s product claims for the model at the time of checking, and they can differ by market or change in later revisions.
Galaxy Z Fold7 and the original Galaxy Fold
Galaxy Z Fold7 (2025)
Samsung’s UK page for Galaxy Z Fold7 describes it with an 8-inch main screen and a 6.5-inch cover screen. Samsung Electronics America’s Fold7 specification sheet, current as of July 9, 2025, carries the same display sizes and adds further technical details. Because these are 2025 manufacturer documents, they describe Fold7 and not later generations.
Original Galaxy Fold (2019)
Samsung’s 2019 Galaxy Fold specification sheet describes the original concept as portable when closed and expansive when opened. It cites a three-app multitasking use case and Samsung DeX, the desktop-style interface Samsung offers on compatible devices. These are historical product claims for that first model. They do not mean every later Z Fold has the same features. The sheet also carries the promotional line “Galaxy Fold is the adaptive mobile experience you’ve been waiting for,” which is marketing language about the original device.

The 200,000-fold durability figure
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 specification sheet states: “Tested and verified for at least 200,000 folds (or approximately 10 years of use). Based on average consumer folding behavior.” Read that as a manufacturer claim for Fold7, with the basis Samsung gives: average consumer folding behavior. The sources used here did not include independent testing of the device, and they do not confirm an equivalent figure for Fold8 or any other generation. Do not apply the number across the family.
Protecting a Galaxy Z Fold
A case is the most direct accessory question for this product. Samsung’s Fold8 product information refers to official accessories, including magnetic cases and their pairing with compatible wireless chargers and magnetic accessories. Search for a case for the exact generation, such as a Galaxy Z Fold8 case, rather than a generic foldable case. A case made for Fold7 or Fold8 will not necessarily fit the other, because the closed and open dimensions differ.
What the official sources do not settle
Samsung’s pages define the product family, list model-specific specifications, and describe accessory relevance. They do not provide independent comparative performance results, hands-on experience, repair costs, retailer stock levels, or details of any affiliate arrangement. They also do not explain the meaning of the “Z” in the name. For questions about battery life, software updates, or connectivity in a particular country, check the specification sheet for the model you are considering and the Samsung page for your market.
