For a regular YouTube video, use a 3840 × 2160 pixel thumbnail (16:9). For a YouTube Short, use 2160 × 3840 pixels (9:16). YouTube lists 640 pixels as the minimum width for video thumbnails and the minimum height for Shorts thumbnails. Export as JPG or PNG and keep within the upload limit for the device you use.

These are YouTube’s current recommendations in its “Add custom thumbnails on YouTube” help guidance. The 3840 × 2160 recommendation applies to ordinary horizontal videos; it is not a requirement to upload a 4K video. A thumbnail can be high resolution even when the underlying video is 1080p or lower.
Why 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080 are still mentioned
1280 × 720 is a familiar 16:9 thumbnail size because it is a practical HD canvas and a threshold used by YouTube’s Thumbnail Test & Compare feature. YouTube says that if any thumbnail in an experiment is below 720p (1280 × 720), experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 480p (854 × 480). That statement describes experiment handling, not the current highest-quality recommendation for a normal custom thumbnail.

It has the correct shape and usually produces a smaller file than 3840 × 2160. However, when your editor and upload limit allow it, the official recommendation is the larger 3840 × 2160 canvas. Do not enlarge a small, blurry image merely to reach 3840 × 2160; start with sharp source artwork and export at the target dimensions.

Choose the right canvas for your content
Regular horizontal videos
Create a 16:9 document at 3840 × 2160 pixels. Keep faces, logos and words away from the extreme edges because previews can be smaller and different surfaces may crop the image. A 16:9 thumbnail is the normal choice for YouTube search, watch pages and desktop browsing.
YouTube Shorts
Create a vertical 9:16 document at 2160 × 3840 pixels. Shorts are displayed in a tall feed, so a vertical composition gives the subject and headline room without relying on tiny text. YouTube’s guidance lists a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts thumbnails.
Podcast playlists
YouTube specifies a 1:1 thumbnail ratio for podcast playlists. Use a square design rather than forcing a horizontal video thumbnail into that slot.

File format, size limits and export settings
YouTube accepts image formats such as JPG and PNG for custom thumbnails. JPG is usually the efficient choice for photographic artwork; PNG is useful when you need crisp flat graphics or transparency in an intermediate workflow. Before uploading, export an ordinary RGB image, inspect it at 100% zoom and confirm the pixel dimensions in your editor.

The limits above come from YouTube’s custom-thumbnail guidance and vary by device. A 3840 × 2160 PNG can exceed the mobile 2 MB limit, so export a quality-adjusted JPG or use desktop upload when appropriate. Lowering JPEG quality changes file size, not the canvas dimensions; do not solve a size problem by accidentally changing a 16:9 image to the wrong aspect ratio.
How to make a thumbnail at the recommended resolution
- Start a new document. For a regular video enter width 3840 and height 2160 pixels. For a Short enter width 2160 and height 3840. Set the resolution metadata to 72 or 96 ppi if your editor asks; YouTube uses the pixel dimensions, not the print-ppi value.
- Set the composition. Place the main subject and the few words that explain the video’s payoff inside a central safe area. Use strong contrast and test the design at a small preview size.
- Check the aspect ratio. Confirm 16:9 for a regular video, 9:16 for a Short or 1:1 for a podcast playlist. Cropping a finished design after export can cut off text and faces.
- Export an accepted image. Choose JPG for a compact photographic thumbnail or PNG for sharp graphic elements. Use the sRGB/RGB color mode where available.
- Verify the file. Reopen the exported file and check its actual pixel dimensions and file size. If uploading from mobile, keep a video thumbnail at or below 2 MB (or a podcast thumbnail at or below 10 MB); desktop permits up to 50 MB.
- Upload in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Content, open the video, choose Thumbnail, upload the image, then save. Shorts and podcast assets can have different presentation surfaces, so inspect the result after publishing.
Vertical-video cropping and replacement caveat
YouTube warns that for vertical videos, a 16:9 custom thumbnail may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscription pages. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. This is why a Short should be designed on a 9:16 canvas rather than treating it as a horizontal video with a rotated frame. You cannot guarantee that one custom image will look identical in every YouTube surface.

Common mistakes and fixes
Uploading 1280 × 720 because it is “the YouTube size”
It is a valid 16:9 size and the 720p experiment threshold, but YouTube’s current recommendation for regular custom thumbnails is 3840 × 2160. Re-export from a larger, sharp source when your file-size limit permits.
Using the wrong orientation for a Short
A 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160 image is horizontal. Rebuild the composition at 2160 × 3840 (9:16) so the subject and type are readable in the Shorts feed.
Meeting pixels but exceeding the upload limit
Export a quality-adjusted JPG, remove unnecessary metadata and try desktop upload, whose video-thumbnail limit is 50 MB. Do not repeatedly resize below the recommended dimensions unless the upload route requires it.

Text or faces are cut off
Return to the source document, move critical elements inward and export again. A thumbnail that is technically 16:9 can still lose content when shown in a smaller card or a vertical-video surface.
Blurry artwork after enlargement
Upscaling cannot restore detail. Replace low-resolution source images, render text and shapes at the final canvas size, and then export once.

- Keep an editable master at the recommended dimensions and export delivery copies as JPG or PNG.
- Use a reusable 16:9 template for regular videos and a separate 9:16 template for Shorts; never rotate one template and assume spacing remains correct.
- Preview on a phone and desktop before publishing. Small cards expose weak contrast and overly thin type faster than a full-size editor view.
- For experiments, ensure every candidate is at least 1280 × 720 so YouTube does not downscale the experiment thumbnails to 854 × 480.
- Store a compressed upload copy separately from the master so later edits do not compound JPEG compression.

Does a 4K thumbnail require a 4K video?
No. Thumbnail resolution and video resolution are separate. YouTube recommends a 3840 × 2160 thumbnail canvas for regular videos regardless of the video’s production resolution.
Can I upload a WebP thumbnail?
The cited YouTube guidance names image formats such as JPG and PNG. Exporting to JPG or PNG avoids relying on an unspecified format.
Which size should I use for a thumbnail A/B test?
Keep every candidate at least 1280 × 720 to avoid YouTube’s documented downscaling behavior for thumbnails below 720p.
