A battery icon beside a USB port usually marks an always-on USB port: a port that can keep supplying power to a connected device while the computer is shut down, asleep, or hibernating. Lenovo and Motorola both document this meaning for their own computers. It is a manufacturer convention, not a universal USB symbol, so it does not tell you the charging speed, whether the feature is switched on, or whether other ports behave the same way.
What the manufacturers say the icon means
Lenovo’s documentation states: “A USB connector with a battery icon (Image: an icon of a dry-cell cylindrical battery) supports the always-on function.” It continues: “The PC can supply power to a USB device connected to this type of connector even when the PC is shut down, in sleep, or hibernation mode.” Lenovo adds that the function can be turned on or off in the computer’s firmware setup utility or in Lenovo Vantage / PC Manager.
Motorola’s page for its computers uses the same wording. It says the PC can power a connected USB device while off, asleep, or hibernating, and that the feature can be controlled in firmware setup.
Both statements are about those companies’ own computers. Other brands may use similar icons or different ones, so check the manual for your exact model.

What an always-on port does in practice
Normally, USB ports lose power when the computer shuts down, and many cut power in sleep or hibernation. An always-on port keeps its power output active. The typical use is charging a phone, earbuds, or other accessory overnight without leaving the laptop running.
- It supplies power to the attached device. That is different from a port that accepts power to charge the computer itself.
- It may be configurable. If the port does not charge with the computer off, the setting may be disabled in firmware setup or in the manufacturer’s utility.
- The cable matters only for fitting the connector on the device you are charging. A cable cannot turn on an always-on feature that the computer lacks or has switched off.
What the symbol does not tell you
The icon does not state a charging rate. USB charging behaviour depends on the port’s design and the standards it follows. The USB Implementers Forum’s Battery Charging 1.2 material treats charging ports as a distinct category from ordinary data ports, and Microchip’s technical summary describes three kinds of battery-charging port:

Do not use these categories to work out what an individual laptop port does from its icon alone. The icon also does not indicate USB-C Power Delivery, fast charging, or any wattage, and no figure for charging speed can be inferred from it.

How to check your own port
Compare four things for the specific port:
- Power while off: does the manual say it supplies power when the computer is shut down, asleep, or hibernating?
- Setting: is always-on enabled in firmware setup or the manufacturer’s app (on Lenovo, Vantage or PC Manager)?
- Data: does the port also carry data, or only power?
- Device limits: what does the device you are charging accept, and which cable does it need?
The battery icon answers only the first question, and only on manufacturers that document it that way. A quick test: connect a phone, shut the computer down, and see whether it shows as charging. If not, check the firmware setting, then the manual.
