The “Hotel Lobby” AI trend turns people in uploaded photos into a generated recreation of Quavo and Takeoff performing “HOTEL LOBBY (Unc & Phew)” on A COLORS SHOW. It is drawing concern because the template reproduces the likeness and movements of Takeoff, who died in 2022, and raises questions about consent, music and performance rights, and what happens to photos uploaded to AI services.
What is the “Hotel Lobby” AI trend?
“Hotel Lobby” is not a hotel or travel trend. It is a social-video template based on the orange studio staging of Quavo and Takeoff’s “HOTEL LOBBY (Unc & Phew)” performance on A COLORS SHOW: two people move in sync while sharing a hanging microphone. Creators replace the performers with friends, celebrities, fictional characters, or other subjects. Tom’s Guide describes the viral clips as AI-generated recreations of that performance (Tom’s Guide, October 5, 2026).
Why is the trend raising concerns?
It recreates a late artist’s likeness
Takeoff died in November 2022 at age 28. Because the template recreates his appearance and movements, people have questioned whether it is appropriate to use his likeness in new clips without his consent. Fans’ reactions have not been uniform. Tom’s Guide reported that Quavo welcomed the renewed attention to the song and connected it to Takeoff’s legacy, while also acknowledging the emotions involved in AI-manipulated depictions of his late nephew. That response adds context but does not settle whether any particular recreation is acceptable.

The trend also raises questions about the original performance, the song, and the likeness of whoever appears in a generated clip. The cited reporting identifies those issues but does not determine whether a specific video violates anyone’s rights. It would be inaccurate to conclude that every recreation is unlawful—or that every use is permissible—on that basis alone.

AI processing can involve uploaded photos
Making a clip may require uploading images of the people who will appear in it. That creates a distinct privacy question: what information the service processes, whether it sends media to another model provider, and how long it retains source files. These practices vary by service, so a policy for one tool should not be treated as a guarantee about another.
How to think about making or sharing a clip
- Get permission. Ask before using another person’s photo, particularly for a public post or a sensitive depiction. HotelLobby AI’s privacy policy says: “Do not upload photos of another person without permission.”
- Check the specific service’s terms. Review its privacy and retention disclosures before uploading. HotelLobby AI says it processes selected photos and prompts to make a video, and that the minimum necessary media and prompt may be sent to a third-party video model. It says temporary source media is scheduled for deletion after the processing window; those statements describe that service, not AI video tools generally (Hotel Lobby AI privacy policy, updated September 25, 2026).
- Consider the source material. A person’s permission to use a photo does not resolve separate questions about the song or original performance. The reporting flags these as concerns, not as settled legal conclusions.
- Make the context clear. Don’t present a generated recreation as authentic footage of the original performance. The trend’s defining format is an AI recreation.
What the trend does—and does not—establish
The format is a recognizable meme template, but its popularity does not answer the ethical or legal questions it raises. A clip may be welcomed as a tribute by some viewers and uncomfortable to others, especially when it depicts someone who has died. The reporting does not provide a legal ruling on individual clips or a named statistic for the trend’s scale. The practical distinction is to treat likeness, source music and performance, and photo-processing practices as separate considerations rather than assuming that one permission or policy resolves them all.
