The FREELANDER 8 is the first model from FREELANDER, a distinct brand jointly developed by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chery. JLR owns the brand and leads design; Chery contributes vehicle technology and supply-chain capabilities. China production began in 2026, and the UAE is the first international market announced.
What is the Freelander 8?
FREELANDER 8 is a premium intelligent all-terrain SUV, according to its maker, and the first strategic nameplate of the revived FREELANDER brand. It is not presented as simply a conventional Land Rover or a model from Chery’s existing range: it belongs to a separate brand developed by JLR and Chery.
The manufacturer has announced several features for the vehicle, but the details available so far are not a complete specification sheet for every market and trim.
- All-terrain system: The Intelligent All-Terrain System (i-ATS) has nine modes, alongside a virtual central differential lock and a rear electronic limited-slip differential, according to FREELANDER’s 2026 materials. FREELANDER announcement
- Cabin and assistance: Chery Group’s 3 October 2026 announcement names a Qualcomm SA8295P cabin chip and standard L2+ driver assistance with more than 30 assistance functions. Chery Group announcement
- Suspension and clearance: The same Chery announcement lists dual-chamber air suspension with Continuously Controlled Damping and a maximum ground clearance of 266 mm for the Middle East market model. The company cautions that specifications vary by market and trim; that clearance figure should not be applied to every version. Chery Group announcement
These are manufacturer-published claims, not independent test results. The announcements do not provide a complete market-by-market powertrain lineup, battery capacity, electric range, charging performance, final dimensions or prices. The 2024 plan described an electric-vehicle portfolio using Chery EV architecture; newer launch material uses new-energy-vehicle language without setting out the full lineup. Is Freelander 8 a Chery or a Land Rover?
It is a FREELANDER model developed by JLR and Chery, rather than a vehicle identified as part of either company’s existing model range. JLR says it owns the FREELANDER brand and has a dedicated design hub that leads its design. Chery supplies intelligent technology and support from its supply chain. The arrangement grew out of a letter of intent signed on 19 June 2024. At that stage, the partners proposed that their Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR) joint venture produce a FREELANDER electric-vehicle portfolio using Chery EV architecture at Changshu. JLR characterized FREELANDER as a distinct growth system, separate from Chery’s existing portfolio and from JLR’s modern-luxury House of Brands. The later public description adds the brand-ownership and design-lead roles. Taken together, the structure is a partnership brand with JLR ownership and design leadership, Chery technology and supply-chain support, and CJLR identified in the original production plan.
Where is the Freelander 8 made, and where will it be sold?
Chery Group reported on 4 August 2026 that the first China mass-production FREELANDER 8 vehicles had rolled off the Changshu assembly line, with production for international markets also underway. The UAE is the first international market the company has named. Its announcement identifies Al Tayer Motors for Dubai and the Northern Emirates, and Premier Motors for Abu Dhabi. The company says wider rollout will begin in left-hand-drive markets, then expand to right-hand-drive and EU-specification markets. That rollout statement does not establish when customer deliveries will begin or confirm availability in any other country. Chery Group announcement
What do the announced testing figures mean?
Chery Group says its development program involved more than 1,000 test vehicles. It also reports that over 200 vehicles were dedicated to all-terrain durability testing, covering 2.15 million kilometres. These are figures reported by the manufacturer in 2026; they describe its own program and are not independent comparative testing evidence. Chery Group announcement

What remains unconfirmed?
The available company announcements do not establish retail prices, customer delivery dates, a complete set of powertrain and battery specifications, electric range, charging performance, final dimensions, crash-test results or country-by-country availability. Those details matter when assessing the SUV or comparing it with another vehicle.

Until comparable specifications are published, a feature list alone cannot establish how the FREELANDER 8 measures up to rivals.
