The Fn key lets you use a second command printed on certain keys. On many laptops, it switches between F1–F12 and controls such as brightness or volume. The way to change which command works by default depends on your computer or keyboard; there is no universal Fn Lock shortcut.
How do I use the Fn key?
Look at the top row of your keyboard for keys marked with both an F-number and an icon or alternate label, such as a speaker or sun. Hold Fn and press one of those keys to use its alternate command. Microsoft Support puts it this way: “On keyboards with an Fn key, hold down Fn and press the key to use the alternate commands.” The available commands depend on the keyboard design.
To see how your keyboard behaves, choose a clearly labeled dual-purpose key and try it once on its own, then again while holding Fn. Note which action each press triggers. Some keyboards also use Fn with other keys for secondary functions such as scrolling or keypad-style input.

Many notebooks assign both a standard F1–F12 function and a device action to each top-row key. Which one runs when you press the key alone is set by the keyboard’s default behavior or by a device setting. If pressing a key changes brightness or volume when you wanted a standard F-key command, the keyboard may be set to make its printed action the default.

How do I turn Fn Lock on or off?
Fn Lock changes which of a key’s paired functions is active when you press it without holding Fn. The toggle is model-specific, so check the official manual for the exact computer or keyboard and search for “Fn Lock,” “Function Key Behavior,” or “Action Keys Mode.” Do not assume that a shortcut from another brand will work on yours.
- Lenovo: Documentation for specified models says Fn+Esc toggles FnLock; some models show an indicator light.
- Logitech: Some keyboards use Fn+Esc. Check the manual for your keyboard model.
- Microsoft All-in-One Media Keyboard: Microsoft documents Fn+Caps Lock for that keyboard.
These examples are not interchangeable instructions for every Lenovo, Logitech, or Microsoft keyboard. Use the documentation for your exact model to confirm the shortcut and whether it has a lock indicator.

Can a setting change the default function-key behavior?
HP Action Keys Mode
On applicable HP notebook PCs, the setting is called Action Keys Mode. With it enabled, pressing a function-row key alone invokes the printed action; with it disabled, you must hold Fn to invoke that action. HP documents changing this setting in BIOS Setup for supported notebooks. Its menu and steps are specific to those HP models, not a general procedure for other computers.
Other computers may use a different firmware setting, manufacturer utility, or keyboard-specific control. Consult the official support information for your model before changing settings.

What if Fn Lock still does not behave as expected?
- Identify the device. Find the computer or keyboard’s exact model name or number.
- Check the key labels. Look for paired F-number and action markings so you know which commands the keyboard supports.
- Verify the toggle. Use the model’s official manual to confirm the Fn Lock shortcut, setting name, and any indicator behavior.
- Test both modes. Try one clearly labeled key alone and with Fn held down. Confirm which command is active by default before testing other keys.
- Use only model-specific setup steps. If the manual points to BIOS/UEFI or a manufacturer utility, follow its instructions for that device rather than applying another brand’s menu path.
Does an external keyboard have an Fn key?
Some external keyboards have an Fn key and secondary commands, but their combinations and available functions depend on the keyboard design. If your current keyboard is simply unfamiliar, identify its model and consult its manual. Replacing it is relevant only if it is damaged or unsuitable, not as a routine fix for Fn Lock.
