For an indoor Monstera, start with a well-draining, soilless potting mix that contains organic matter. The goal is a medium that lets excess water drain and air reach the roots while retaining some moisture. Penn State Extension gives a pH range of 6.0–8.0 for Monstera mix and says you can adjust a purchased mix with bark, perlite, or charcoal; it does not prescribe a single brand or ingredient ratio.

What soil should you use for an indoor Monstera?

Choose a potting mix made for container plants rather than ordinary garden soil. Penn State Extension recommends a well-draining soilless mix rich in organic matter, with a neutral pH of 6.0–8.0. That broad range is Penn State’s care guidance, not the result of a published comparison showing one pH to be superior.

“Soilless” does not mean the mix contains no organic material. It means it is formulated as a container medium rather than dug-up ground soil. A suitable purchased houseplant mix is a practical starting point; assess its texture and how it behaves in your pot before adding anything.

What makes a Monstera mix drain well without drying too fast?

Container roots need both moisture and air space. A mix that compacts or stays waterlogged can restrict air around roots; one that dries too rapidly may require more frequent watering. The useful target is a medium that drains excess water but retains some moisture.

UNH Extension describes perlite as an ingredient that improves drainage and aeration. It says bark provides aeration and dries faster than peat. Penn State also lists charcoal as an optional addition to a purchased mix, alongside bark and perlite. These are adjustment options, not ingredients every Monstera mix must contain.

  • Drainage and aeration: Water should pass through rather than leave the medium persistently saturated, and the mix should retain air space around roots.
  • Moisture retention: The medium should hold some moisture between waterings without staying soggy.
  • Ingredients: Look for organic matter; consider bark, perlite, or charcoal only if the mix’s texture or performance calls for adjustment.

“Chunky” is a descriptive term, not a measured standard in these recommendations. If you use it, think of visible coarse pieces that help keep the medium open—not a guarantee of drainage or plant health.

Should you buy a mix or make your own?

A purchased, well-draining soilless houseplant mix is the simplest place to start. You can adjust it with bark, perlite, or charcoal if its texture and drainage warrant it. The cited Extension guidance does not establish an authoritative Monstera-specific DIY ratio, so a fixed bark-to-perlite-to-coir formula should not be treated as proven or official.

Compare the mix you are considering against the growing conditions it will face: the pot, how quickly it dries, and how you water. No brand trial in the cited sources identifies a “best” product or shows that a particular ingredient prevents root rot.

How should watering work with the soil?

Soil choice and watering go together. Penn State Extension advises watering thoroughly, then letting the top 1–2 inches of soil dry before watering again. This is a top-layer cue, not an instruction to let the entire pot become bone dry. Penn State also identifies overwatering as a root-rot risk.

If a mix stays wet for a long time, review both its drainage and your watering routine rather than assuming that adding more coarse material alone will solve the problem. A mix that drains well still needs appropriate watering.

Why not use garden soil in a pot?

Garden soil and container potting mix are not interchangeable. UNH Extension notes that garden soil can compact and become waterlogged in containers, reducing air space around roots. Use a medium formulated for pots instead of filling a Monstera’s container with soil from the yard.

Does outdoor Monstera need the same soil?

No: landscape guidance describes a different growing context from an indoor pot. UF/IFAS says Monstera adapts to most well-drained landscape soil types, including sandy and high-pH calcareous soils. That does not make those ground soils recommendations for container use.

For propagation, distinguish rooting media from a long-term mix for a mature plant. University of Minnesota Extension discusses well-draining media for cuttings and lists perlite, potting soil, LECA, and water as possible propagation options with different tradeoffs; it does not establish a definitive mature-plant soil formula.

What other care guidance supports this choice?

University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension describes Monstera as benefiting from rich soil and ample root room, in line with choosing a suitable container medium and giving roots space. For the specific pH range, optional mix additions, and watering cue, Penn State’s Monstera guidance is more explicit: Monstera as a Houseplant. For general container-media properties, see UNH Extension’s guide to soil for potted plants.
