The ARM Mali-450 MP is a legacy graphics processor design for consumer devices such as TVs and set-top boxes. It improves on the Mali-400 MP and scales from one to eight cores, but it belongs to the OpenGL ES 2.0 generation: it does not support OpenGL ES 3.x, and Vulkan support should not be assumed. For a device buyer, the full chipset and box specifications matter more than the Mali-450 name alone.

What is ARM Mali-450?

Mali-450 MP is a graphics processing unit (GPU) design from ARM—now styled Arm—in its Utgard family. Arm introduced it in 2013 as an enhanced follow-on to Mali-400 MP, intended to provide 2D and 3D acceleration in consumer electronics while building on the established Mali-400 software ecosystem. Arm claimed up to twice the OpenGL ES 2.0 performance of the earlier family; that is a vendor claim, not a guarantee that every device will be twice as fast. Arm’s 2013 launch announcement

Mali-450 is GPU intellectual property, not a complete chip or a device model. A system-on-chip (SoC) maker integrates a particular configuration into a product, and device performance also depends on implementation, memory, cooling, software, and workload.

What do MP4, MP6, and MP8 mean?

The suffix indicates the number of GPU cores in that Mali-450 configuration. Arm documented scalability from one to eight cores; MP4, MP6, and MP8 therefore refer to four-, six-, and eight-core configurations. More cores alone do not establish a device’s real-world speed: clock rate, manufacturing process, memory bandwidth, and thermal limits also matter.

Arm’s 2013 overview gives the following reference figures for MP4 and MP8 configurations. The numbers are tied to the stated process and clock examples, not specifications for every retail chip.

Configuration Reference condition Triangle rate Pixel rate
Mali-450 MP4 270 MHz, 40 nm LP process (Arm, 2013) 59 Mtri/s 1.1 Gpix/s
Mali-450 MP4 650 MHz, 28 nm HPM process (Arm, 2013) 142 Mtri/s 2.6 Gpix/s
Mali-450 MP8 270 MHz, 40 nm LP process (Arm, 2013) 59 Mtri/s 2.2 Gpix/s
Mali-450 MP8 650 MHz, 28 nm HPM process (Arm, 2013) 142 Mtri/s 5.2 Gpix/s

These are Arm’s reference throughput figures, not independent benchmarks or a promise about a finished device. Arm’s overview also describes the one-to-eight-core range and its OpenGL ES 2.0 positioning: Arm Mali-450 overview.

Which graphics APIs does Mali-450 support?

Official specifications list OpenGL ES 1.1 and 2.0, plus OpenVG 1.1. Mali-450 is a Utgard GPU, and Arm’s architecture guidance describes Utgard designs as graphics-only GPUs for OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0. OpenGL ES 3.0 through 3.2 and the Android Extension Pack (AEP) do not work on Utgard GPUs. Vulkan support should not be assumed for Mali-450.

This API ceiling matters for newer games and apps that require later graphics features. A listing that advertises a 64-bit processor or 64-bit drivers does not change the GPU’s API generation. Arm discussed 64-bit Mali-450 drivers specifically for 64-bit application builds using OpenGL ES 2.0, not as an upgrade to newer graphics APIs.

Is Mali-450 good for gaming?

It can run games designed for OpenGL ES 2.0, but the GPU’s age and API ceiling make it a poor basis for expecting compatibility with demanding or newer games. Core count and advertised throughput figures cannot by themselves predict frame rate: the SoC’s clock and memory configuration, device cooling, resolution, driver quality, and the game all affect results. No single performance verdict applies to every device carrying a Mali-450.

Before buying a device for a specific game, check that game’s requirements and compatibility against the complete device model. Do not treat “MP8” or a high clock claim as proof that a title will run well.

Which devices use Mali-450?

Arm documented Mali-450 in consumer electronics, including digital TVs, set-top boxes, and smart IP TVs. Its announcement of the Amlogic AML8726-M8 described an implementation with Mali-450 MP6. A separate Arm driver article from 2014 also cited entry-level smartphones pairing Mali-450 with Cortex-A53 processors. These examples show where the design appeared; they do not establish the current availability or quality of any particular product.

What should you check before buying a Mali-450 TV box?

Judge the whole device against what you plan to watch or run. In particular, verify:

  • Exact GPU configuration: Look for MP4, MP6, or MP8 and confirm the claim against the device’s SoC documentation.
  • Memory and storage: Check the installed RAM and usable storage for the apps and media library you intend to use.
  • Video support: Confirm supported codecs, maximum output resolution, and any other video requirements for your content. GPU core count does not establish video-decoding support.
  • Streaming access: Check DRM and service certification for the specific box and region. A device running Android is not automatically certified for every streaming service or playback quality.
  • Software support: Verify the Android release, firmware update history, and availability of support for that exact model.
  • Connections and heat: Check the ports, network options, and reports or documentation on thermal behavior under sustained use.
  • Seller and availability: Confirm the precise model, return policy, and seller reliability; historical Arm documentation does not establish present stock, pricing, or firmware quality.

Compare complete device specifications rather than treating MP4, MP6, or MP8 as a ranking of streaming compatibility or overall performance.
