The Antikythera mechanism was an ancient Greek bronze gearwork instrument that calculated and displayed astronomical and calendar cycles. Its surviving parts and inscriptions show functions including tracking the Sun and Moon, predicting eclipses, and marking the timing of major games. It is sometimes called an ancient analogue computer, but it was a specialized mechanical calculator—not an electronic or general-purpose computer.
What was the Antikythera mechanism?
The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University describes it as “a bronze gearwork device displaying chronological cycles and motions and phenomena of the heavenly bodies, made somewhere in the Hellenistic world in the second or early first century B.C.” (Institute for the Study of the Ancient World).
In practical terms, turning the mechanism’s input set a system of interlocking gears in motion. Their differing gear ratios converted that rotation into coordinated indications on dials. The National Archaeological Museum explains this basic principle: a driven gear rotates at a rate determined by its relationship to the gear that drives it (National Archaeological Museum: Antikythera mechanism).

The label refers to what the gears did: they mechanically encoded relationships between cycles and transformed a manual input into calculated displays. The Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports calls it “the oldest known, portable, mechanical computer of antiquity” (Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports catalog). That is a modern category for a specialized calculating instrument. The mechanism was not electronic and did not perform general-purpose computing.
#1 Best Overall
- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

What did the mechanism calculate or display?
The strongest evidence points to substantial astronomical and calendrical functions. Surviving dials, scales, pointers, gears, and Greek inscriptions support the following uses:
- Sun and Moon cycles: the instrument represented their motions and related calendar cycles.
- Eclipses: it could predict solar and lunar eclipses.
- Calendars: its displays tracked multi-year cycles. The National Observatory of Athens describes front scales for the calendar and zodiac, plus a rear Metonic cycle dial (National Observatory of Athens).
- Games: a small dial indicated the timing of athletic events, including the Panhellenic Games.
Were planets displayed too?
The Greek Ministry catalog says the mechanism probably represented the five planets known in antiquity. That claim is less certain than its calendar and eclipse functions: NYU identifies possible lost planetary gearwork as an open research question. Any detailed planetary reconstruction therefore depends on inferred, missing components rather than a complete surviving planetary display.

What survives, and what do the inscriptions tell us?
The Greek Ministry catalog lists 82 surviving fragments, including 30 gears, under inventory number X 15087. These are counts of the preserved remains, not the original mechanism’s complete component list. The fragments are held at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

When was it made, and where was it found?
The Greek Ministry catalog gives a probable date of 150–100 BCE and records the Antikythera shipwreck as the find context; the fragments were recovered in January 1901. NYU gives a broader manufacture range—the second or early first century BCE—and says the Greco-Roman ship probably sank not long after 70 BCE. These descriptions do not establish an exact year of manufacture or a precise place of origin.

The surviving mechanism is fragmentary, so some displays and internal arrangements must be reconstructed. Its exact manufacture date and provenance, the extent of any planetary gearing, and its original owner and social purpose are not settled. The secure picture is already significant: a portable bronze instrument whose surviving gearwork and inscriptions reveal coordinated astronomical and calendrical calculations, without requiring certainty about every missing part.
