Starlink Direct to Cell is a satellite-to-mobile service that lets compatible LTE phones connect to satellites carrying cellular equipment, extending a participating mobile operator’s coverage beyond ordinary cell towers. It is designed to work with existing phones rather than a Starlink dish or a dedicated satellite handset, but access depends on your carrier, device, location, and the service available in your market.

How Starlink Direct to Cell works

A Direct to Cell satellite carries an LTE modem, or eNodeB, that acts like a cellular base station in orbit. Its phased-array antenna and onboard technology are designed to link with ordinary phones, whose antennas and transmit power were built for ground-based cellular networks. Starlink says participating mobile operators provide LTE spectrum; its February 2025 announcement described partner spectrum in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range. Starlink’s service announcement

The connection is part of a mobile operator’s network, not a separate satellite-phone system that works automatically everywhere. Starlink describes Direct to Cell as integrating with operators similarly to a roaming partner. Traffic can travel through the Starlink constellation and its laser backhaul and ground infrastructure, then connect to the operator’s core network. Starlink’s technical explanation

Keeping a connection while satellites move quickly across the sky presents technical challenges, including Doppler shift, timing, latency, beam placement, and handoffs. Starlink identifies phased-array antennas, custom silicon, and software as components of its approach. Those company descriptions explain the design; they are not independent performance tests.

What you need—and what you do not

  • A compatible LTE phone: Starlink says the service is designed for existing phones without specialized extra hardware. That does not mean every LTE phone qualifies; handset eligibility can depend on the carrier and market. Starlink Direct to Cell
  • A participating mobile operator: The operator’s spectrum and network integration are central to the service. Check with your carrier for local availability and eligibility.
  • No Starlink dish for the phone connection: A Starlink user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount are for Starlink’s separate satellite broadband service—not Direct to Cell. Starlink residential service

How it differs from Starlink satellite internet

Feature Direct to Cell Starlink satellite broadband
Connection endpoint Compatible LTE phone connects to a satellite through a participating mobile operator Starlink user terminal and Wi-Fi router connect devices to satellite broadband
Extra Starlink equipment Not intended to require a dish or dedicated satellite handset Requires a Starlink user terminal and related equipment
Network relationship Uses participating carrier spectrum and integrates with its network Separate satellite internet service

Which carriers offer it?

Availability depends on the country and operator, and announcements should be read as dated snapshots rather than a guaranteed list of plans available today. In February 2025, Starlink said commercial satellite messaging was available in the United States through T-Mobile and in New Zealand through One NZ. The same announcement described testing with partners in Australia, Canada, Chile, and Japan. Starlink’s February 2025 announcement

A later Starlink Mobile page lists partner operators in multiple countries and describes messaging, data through apps, and voice through apps, while describing native calling and broader capabilities as future service. The page is company-authored and may change; a listed partner does not by itself establish that a service is commercially launched or purchasable in a particular market. Starlink Mobile
