In most sports and esports coverage, a “spread bet” means wagering on a point handicap: the favorite is given a negative line, the underdog a positive one, and the handicap is applied to the score for settlement. The team you select must cover that adjusted score—not simply win the event. In the UK, however, “sports spread betting” can also mean a separate stake-per-point product, where losses can exceed the original stake.

What is a point spread?

A point spread is a settlement handicap. It changes the calculation used to determine whether a wager wins; it does not change the actual score or give either team a physical head start. A favorite is commonly listed with a minus sign, such as -5.5, while an underdog is listed with a plus sign, such as +5.5.

For the wager calculation, subtract the favorite’s spread from its score or add the underdog’s spread to its score. The selected side covers when its adjusted result is better than its opponent’s. That is why a team can win the real game but fail to cover, or lose the game and still cover. DraftKings’ point-spread explanation describes the basic calculation.

How do point spreads work?

Example: Cleveland -5.5 versus Orlando +5.5

DraftKings uses a Cleveland–Orlando example: Cleveland is -5.5, and the final score is Cleveland 104, Orlando 100. Subtract 5.5 from Cleveland’s score for settlement: Cleveland’s adjusted score is 98.5, compared with Orlando’s 100. Cleveland won the game, but did not cover -5.5; Orlando +5.5 covers. This is an explanatory example, not a current line or a prediction.

What does +5.5 or -5.5 mean?

  • +5.5: Add 5.5 to that team’s score for settlement. The wager wins if the adjusted score is higher than the opponent’s.
  • -5.5: Subtract 5.5 from that team’s score. The wager wins if the adjusted score remains higher than the opponent’s.

The half point means the adjusted scores cannot tie on that line, so there is no push from an exact tie. With a whole-number line, an exact tie after adjustment may push instead; the operator’s rules determine how that wager is settled.

What does it mean to cover the spread?

To cover is to finish ahead after applying the handicap. A favorite laying 5.5 points must win by at least six points to cover. An underdog receiving 5.5 points covers if it wins outright or loses by five points or fewer. On a whole-number line, the precise margin can result in a push rather than a win or loss.

What happens if a team wins but doesn’t cover?

The bet on that favorite loses if it wins by less than the required margin. For example, a favorite at -5.5 that wins by four points has won the game but not the spread bet. The opposing side at +5.5 would cover in that result. The game’s winner and the spread bet’s winner are separate outcomes.

How are pushes, overtime, and odds handled?

Pushes and match period

A whole-number spread can produce a tie in adjusted scores. Fanatics’ Tennessee house rules, for example, say a two-way whole-number spread pushes when those adjusted scores tie. The same rules state that full-game and second-half bets include overtime unless otherwise stated. Those are Fanatics provisions for Tennessee, not universal settlement rules; check the operator’s rules for the market and jurisdiction you are using.

Odds are the price, not the handicap

The spread tells you how to adjust the score for settlement. The odds are the price and payout terms for the wager. A displayed payout should not be read as the event’s “true” probability: the World Lottery Association’s 2024 Code of Practice notes that displayed odds include a bookmaker profit margin.

Does “spread betting” mean something different in the UK?

Yes. In UK sports spread betting, the customer typically stakes an amount per point against a quoted range, margin, or index. This differs from a fixed-odds point-spread wager, where a handicap is applied to a result and the payout terms are quoted in advance.

HM Revenue & Customs describes three kinds of sports spread bets:

  • Total bets: for example, wagering on a team’s total runs.
  • Supremacy bets: wagering on the margin of victory.
  • Index bets: wagering on an index representing outcomes not captured by a simple score.

HMRC illustrates a quoted cricket total spread of “280–300 runs” for England’s first innings against Australia. In this kind of product, the spread is the firm’s quoted range and the return or loss depends on how accurate the result is and the stake per point. HMRC warns that the stake is not the limit of the financial risk: losses can be many times the original stake. Its page is tax guidance, published in 2016 and updated 21 July 2021, not current regulatory advice. For a specific operator’s terms, Spreadex’s sports spread betting rules effective 13 April 2026 identify its rules by sport and customer agreement as governing its bets, and state that Spreadex is FCA-authorised and regulated.

How do spreads work in esports?

The same broad handicap idea can apply to esports: a line adjusts a result for settlement, and the selected side must cover. What counts as the relevant score, match period, official statistic, cancellation, or void is defined by the operator and the individual market. UK Gambling Commission guidance says esports betting should be treated no differently from betting on another live event; that is UK guidance, not a guarantee that every esports event or market is offered or lawful everywhere.

Rules also differ by jurisdiction. For example, Pennsylvania regulations require proposed events and wager types to be submitted for approval before an operator accepts them. That illustrates local oversight rather than a universal approval process.

What to check before comparing spread offers

A line is an operator’s offered market, not an objective prediction or a guarantee of balanced betting. Compare the terms that determine what you are actually wagering on:

  1. Line and price: Check the handicap and its odds separately.
  2. Push treatment: Determine whether a whole-number line can tie and what happens to the stake if it does.
  3. Match period: Confirm whether the market covers the full event, a half, a map, or another period, and whether overtime counts.
  4. Cancellation and settlement: Read the operator’s rules for abandoned events, official statistics, and other void conditions.
  5. Local availability and legality: Confirm that the operator and specific wager are permitted where you are located.
