Social media reach is the estimated number of distinct people who saw content during a specified period. It differs from impressions, which count exposure events: one person can generate several impressions but still count as one person reached. Reach does not, by itself, show whether people paid attention, watched a video, or interacted.

What social media reach measures

Reach describes the size of the distinct audience exposed to a post, video, or ad within a defined scope and time window. It is usually an estimate, not a verified headcount of every person who saw the content. Platforms may use different data and rules to estimate unique people, so a reach number should be read alongside the platform, report type, content or campaign, and reporting period.

For example, YouTube calls its measure “Unique reach” and defines it as the “Estimated total number of individual people who saw your video or channel.” YouTube says its estimate accounts for shared viewing on devices such as YouTube TV and the main YouTube app on TV. Reach vs. impressions, views, and engagement

These metrics answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Metric What it tells you What it does not establish by itself
Reach Estimated distinct people exposed to the content within the report’s stated scope and period. How many times they saw it, whether they watched or noticed it, or whether they responded.
Impressions How many times content or an ad was displayed. The same person can account for multiple impressions. How many distinct people were exposed.
Views Plays or view events counted according to that platform’s rules. A universal amount of viewing time or a distinct-person count.
Engagement Interactions such as likes, comments, and shares, according to the platform’s reporting. A universal definition shared across platforms, or the total audience exposed.

Google Ads illustrates the difference between reach and impressions: if one person sees an ad on a phone, desktop, and tablet, Google may count one person reached and three impressions. Google Ads Help: About unique reach

A large reach figure therefore indicates broad estimated exposure, not attention or response. YouTube reports thumbnail impressions, unique viewers, and views as separate measures; it also advises interpreting impressions and click-through rate in context rather than in isolation. Why reach is an estimate

Platforms have to infer whether exposures across devices belong to the same person. Google Display & Video 360 says its cross-device estimates use unique cookies, mobile device IDs, and aggregated sign-in data. YouTube likewise labels unique reach and unique viewers as estimates. The methods and available signals differ, which means two platforms—or two report types on one platform—may not define a “unique person” in the same way. A platform-specific example: YouTube thumbnail impressions

YouTube distinguishes thumbnail impressions from unique viewers. Its documentation says a thumbnail impression is counted when a thumbnail is displayed for more than one second with at least 50% of it visible. This is a YouTube-specific rule for registered thumbnail impressions, not a general definition of reach or impressions on other platforms. YouTube also lists placements where thumbnail impressions are and are not counted. YouTube Help: Understand your YouTube video reach

YouTube says unique-viewer data is available for periods up to 90 days. That limit applies to this YouTube measure; it should not be assumed to apply to other platforms. YouTube Help: Understand your YouTube audience

How to compare reach figures fairly

Before comparing posts, campaigns, or platform reports, check that you are comparing equivalent measurements. Align:

  • Platform and report type: confirm that each figure comes from the same platform and a comparable analytics report.
  • Time window: use the same reporting dates and duration.
  • Paid or organic content: distinguish advertising reach from reach for organic posts.
  • Definition of a unique person: check how the platform estimates and deduplicates people, including whether shared or cross-device viewing is considered.
  • Metric itself: make sure both numbers are reach rather than one reach figure and one impression, view, or engagement count.

These checks matter because official platform documentation describes different scopes and estimation methods. A higher number is not necessarily evidence of a larger real-world audience if the reporting definitions or periods do not match.
