Snapdragon X Plus is Qualcomm’s family of laptop processor platforms—not a laptop model or a guarantee of a particular laptop’s features. The exact processor identifier matters: X Plus models differ in core count and other capabilities, while memory, storage, ports, display, battery life, and software support depend on the laptop maker’s configuration.

What does Snapdragon X Plus mean?

Snapdragon X Plus is a tier within Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X laptop processor line. Qualcomm lists multiple X Plus identifiers, including X1P-64-100, X1P-42-100, X1P-46-100, and X1P-66-100. That means “Snapdragon X Plus” alone does not identify one exact chip configuration. Qualcomm’s product page identifies the family and its variants.

The processor is one component inside a PC. A laptop’s full specification also depends on its manufacturer and configuration, so check the complete device listing rather than inferring its RAM, storage, display, or connectivity from the processor family name.

Why the exact X Plus model number matters

Model suffixes distinguish processors with different specifications. Dell’s published comparison identifies the X1P-64-100 as an X Plus with 10 cores and the X1P-42-100 as an X Plus 8-core with 8 cores. Dell lists 42 MB of total cache for the former and 30 MB for the latter, along with different maximum multi-thread frequencies. Dell’s Latitude 5455 specifications show these distinctions.

  • Power up – Built with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus (8 Core) processors, Surface Laptop delivers powerful performance and AI accelerated power.
  • Turbocharged NPU – Surface Laptop features the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU that delivers up to 45 TOPS designed to accelerate AI experiences.
  • Express your style – Surface Laptop comes in three new colors – Violet, Ocean, and Platinum.[2]

Microsoft lists an X1P64100 processor option in its Surface Pro for Business 11th Edition specifications, along with a Qualcomm Hexagon NPU rated at 45 TOPS. This describes that business-edition device’s listed option, not every Surface Pro configuration. Microsoft’s Surface Pro for Business specifications provide the device-specific details.

What the NPU and TOPS figures tell you

An NPU, or neural processing unit, is a processor designed to accelerate neural-network operations and AI tasks. Qualcomm describes the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core as having a 45-TOPS NPU in its September 4, 2024 announcement. TOPS means trillions of operations per second; the rating is a processor specification, not a promise that every AI task will run at that speed. Qualcomm’s announcement is the source for that 8-core figure.

Qualcomm’s June 5, 2024 explanation of Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC requirements cited an NPU rated at least 40 TOPS, plus 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage. Those memory and storage amounts are PC-level requirements, not specifications guaranteed by the Snapdragon X Plus name. Because program requirements and software availability can change, check Qualcomm’s dated explanation alongside current Microsoft and laptop-maker information when evaluating a specific PC.

Does Snapdragon X Plus mean a laptop is a Copilot+ PC?

No processor label by itself establishes that a complete laptop qualifies as a Copilot+ PC. Qualcomm’s 2024 explanation describes minimum NPU, memory, and storage requirements, but the designation applies to the PC as a whole. Nor does the label establish that every Copilot+ feature is available, enabled, or identical across laptops and Windows releases. Check the exact computer’s qualification and the current availability of the features you intend to use.

What varies from one Snapdragon X Plus laptop to another?

Two laptops using processors from the same family can differ substantially. When comparing specific machines, examine the whole configuration rather than treating the processor as a proxy for device quality.

  • Processor: Confirm the full model identifier and core count.
  • Memory and storage: Check installed RAM and SSD capacity in the exact configuration.
  • Design and display: Compare form factor, screen size, resolution, and other display details relevant to your use.
  • Ports and connectivity: Verify the connections and wireless capabilities your peripherals and network require.
  • Compatibility: Check that the software, accessories, and specialist workloads you rely on work as expected on the specific PC.
  • Performance evidence: Prefer independent tests of the actual models under comparable conditions. The cited sources do not establish an independent head-to-head ranking across all X Plus variants.
  • Local price and availability: Compare configurations in the same country; listings and availability can change.

Why battery-life claims belong to the laptop, not the chip

Battery life is a result of the complete device and the way it is used, not a universal property of its processor. For example, Dell reports up to 27 hours of video playback for a Latitude 5455 with an FHD+ display, 16 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD, based on Dell Labs testing in August 2024. Dell says actual battery life may be significantly lower and varies with configuration, use, software, operating conditions, and power settings. Dell’s test disclosure applies to that tested laptop configuration, not every Snapdragon X Plus PC.

Microsoft likewise reports up to 14 hours of local video playback and up to 10 hours of active web use for specified Wi-Fi Surface Pro preproduction test devices. Those figures came from Microsoft’s April 2024 testing and are subject to the configurations and conditions disclosed in its Surface Pro for Business specifications. Neither manufacturer’s result should be transferred to another laptop.

How to read a Snapdragon X Plus listing

  1. Find the full processor identifier, not just “Snapdragon X Plus.”
  2. Confirm the laptop’s exact RAM, storage, display, ports, and other hardware in the selected configuration.
  3. If Copilot+ features matter, verify the complete PC’s designation and check that the specific feature you need is available for that device and software version.
  4. For battery or performance comparisons, look for tests of the actual laptop models with comparable workloads and conditions.
