Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR) is Qualcomm’s game-image upscaling technology: a game renders at a lower resolution, then GSR reconstructs an image at a higher output resolution. That can give a developer more room to target visual detail, frame rate or lower power use, but it is not a universal Snapdragon-phone setting or a guaranteed battery-life boost. Support depends on a game integrating the technology.

What is Snapdragon Game Super Resolution?

GSR is a graphics technique developed by Qualcomm Snapdragon Studios and optimized for Adreno GPUs. Rather than rendering every pixel at the display’s full resolution, a game can render fewer pixels and use an upscaler to produce a higher-resolution image. Qualcomm introduced the original version for mobile and XR games and said it was available to key partners. Qualcomm’s 2023 announcement describes GSR as a single-pass, spatial-aware technique intended to balance image quality, performance and power use.

Upscaling is not the same as making the game render its original scene at the higher resolution. The game still starts with a lower-resolution image; the algorithm estimates and sharpens detail in the output. The intended benefit is that the GPU has less rendering work to do before the image is enlarged.

How GSR 1 works

The original GSR, now distinguishable as GSR 1, works spatially: it processes the current frame rather than combining information from earlier frames. Qualcomm describes it as a single GPU pass that combines scaling and sharpening. Its developer explanation says the method uses a 12-tap Lanczos-like scaling filter with adaptive sharpening. Qualcomm’s GSR developer overview outlines these implementation details.

Qualcomm contrasts GSR 1 with basic bilinear interpolation, which can soften edges and fine detail, and says its approach is customized for the Adreno pipeline. Qualcomm also says the design uses fewer registers, texture samples and arithmetic instructions than alternative techniques, and reduces bandwidth associated with multiple upscaling passes. These are Qualcomm’s technical comparisons, not independent benchmarks across all phones or games.

GSR 1’s spatial approach was designed for mobile rendering pipelines that may not provide the extra inputs temporal techniques need. Qualcomm documents an OpenGL implementation for Android apps running on Snapdragon mobile platforms, and OpenGL or DirectX implementations for Windows on Snapdragon apps. A VR-specific derivative, Meta Quest Super Resolution, was developed with Meta for Quest 3; it should not be confused with blanket support across Snapdragon phones.

How GSR 2 differs from GSR 1

GSR 2 is a temporal anti-aliasing and upscaling technique, not simply a renamed version of the original single-pass algorithm. Announced on October 22, 2024, it can use information from prior frames along with inputs such as low-resolution color, depth and motion vectors. Qualcomm says this temporal information can improve image quality compared with GSR 1’s current-frame method. Qualcomm’s GSR 2 article describes its approach, and the Snapdragon Game Super Resolution repository provides developer material.

Characteristic GSR 1 GSR 2
Approach Spatial; works from the current image Temporal; can use prior-frame information
Inputs described by Qualcomm Current frame Low-resolution color, depth and motion-vector inputs
Processing structure Single pass combining upscaling and sharpening Convert and upscale passes, with an optional sharpening pass; implementation variants differ
Potential image-quality consideration Does not accumulate information across frames Temporal methods can encounter ghosting; Qualcomm says GSR 2 aims to reduce ghosting, aliasing and flicker

Using information from multiple frames can help retain detail, but it also introduces temporal artifacts as a possible concern. Qualcomm’s stated aim to reduce ghosting, flicker and aliasing is not a guarantee that these effects are impossible in every game or implementation.

What performance and battery benefits can players expect?

The benefit depends on what the developer does with the rendering headroom. Qualcomm says a game could use it to target a higher output resolution, a higher frame rate or lower power consumption. These are alternative outcomes a developer may pursue, not three benefits that every user receives simultaneously. A game that spends the saved GPU work on a higher frame rate, for example, may not use it to reduce power by the same amount.

Qualcomm’s original announcement gives illustrative examples such as upscaling 540p to 1080p, and suggests that a game running at 30 frames per second could reach 60 or more with GSR. Those are Qualcomm’s examples and claims; they do not establish those results for arbitrary games, hardware or settings. The reviewed sources do not provide an independently established, general battery-life uplift for typical players.

Does your Snapdragon phone or game support GSR?

Not automatically. Qualcomm’s materials document software and engine integration for developers, including source code, samples, Unreal Engine integration and Vulkan or OpenGL examples for GSR 2. The repository lists GSR 1.0.0 on June 29, 2023, GSR 1.1.0 on January 29, 2024, and GSR 2.0.0 on October 21, 2024, under a BSD 3-clause license. Public developer resources show that studios can integrate the technology; they do not establish a complete list of supported commercial games or consumer phone models.

For a player, the practical question is whether a particular game has integrated GSR and whether that implementation supports the device and graphics API in use. The cited Qualcomm material does not establish a universal system setting that turns GSR on for any game, nor does it identify a phone or accessory that is required for it.
