The Society for Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) is a global professional society for creative professionals, media technologists, and engineers. It develops standards and other engineering guidance for motion pictures, television, and related media workflows. SMPTE is not a film or television production company; its work helps define technical practices so equipment and systems can work together.

What SMPTE does

SMPTE’s stated mission is “To inspire technological advancement in art, science, and media everywhere for everyone.” Its standards work covers the technical handling of images as they are produced, processed, reproduced, distributed, and displayed, along with associated audio, data, metadata, and control signals. The formal scope is set out in the SMPTE Standards Operations Manual, Version 3.1, approved 9 February 2015.

Common standards support interoperability: organizations can use shared technical criteria when creating, exchanging, distributing, or displaying media. SMPTE says its standards are developed impartially. The existence of a document does not, by itself, require members or nonmembers to follow it.

What SMPTE publishes

SMPTE publishes several kinds of engineering documents. They differ in purpose, and a draft should not be mistaken for a published standard.

Document type Purpose or status
Standard (ST) States criteria considered necessary for effective interchange or interconnection.
Recommended Practice (RP) Provides guidance intended to facilitate implementation.
Engineering Guideline (EG) Another type of SMPTE engineering document.
Committee draft Work in development, not a published standard.

SMPTE also publishes other informative or disclosure document types. Its standards overview says the Society has over 800 standards, recommended practices, and engineering guidelines; the page does not display a year for that figure.

How standards are developed

SMPTE describes standards development as collaborative. Its current overview identifies seven technology committees, supported by working and drafting groups; study groups and task forces handle specialized or cross-cutting work. Committee scopes span electronic capture, generation, editing, mastering, archiving, and reproduction; theatrical distribution and operations; metadata and registries; file formats; facility infrastructure; media systems and control; and packaging and interchange.

Professionals interested in or affected by SMPTE standards can participate in committee work. The Society’s participation FAQ says participants must accept the applicable participation agreement and notes that fees may apply.

Examples of SMPTE standards and technologies

SMPTE identifies several widely used standards and technologies as key examples:

  • ST 2110: a standards family for professional media over IP networks.
  • MXF: Material eXchange Format, a media container format.
  • IMF: Interoperable Master Format, used to package and exchange media versions.
  • D-Cinema: standards for digital cinema systems and distribution.
  • SDI and HD-SDI: Serial Digital Interface standards for transmitting digital video.
  • Time Code: a system for identifying positions in media using time-based labels.

The Society’s key standards explainer also describes DPX as a common file format for digital intermediate and visual-effects work, and explains how HDR/EOTF standards help represent high-dynamic-range content consistently through a workflow.

Who SMPTE is for

SMPTE serves people working across media technology, production, engineering, and related creative disciplines. SMPTE’s “Who We Are” page describes it as a global society with more than 5,000 members; the page does not display a year for that figure. Membership is one way to engage with the Society, while standards participation is open to professionals interested in or affected by the relevant work, subject to the participation requirements.
