Samsung EX-Link is a serial-control connection on some Samsung TVs. With a compatible external controller, it can handle functions such as power, volume, input source, and channel selection. Whether your TV supports it—and whether it uses a 3.5 mm port or a model-specific USB dongle—depends on the exact model.
What Samsung EX-Link does
Samsung defines EX-LINK as a port for serial control of the TV, typically used by service technicians. In an RS-232 control setup, an external system sends commands directly to the television. Samsung lists power, volume, source, and channel as examples of functions that may be controlled. The commands and connection method depend on the TV model; there is no universal setup to assume for every Samsung television. Samsung’s TV Ports Glossary describes EX-LINK, and its RS-232 support guidance covers the control connection and service-only limitation.
How to check whether your Samsung TV supports it
- Find the full model code. Use the label on the TV or the model information shown in its settings. The model code, not just the Samsung brand or screen size, is needed to identify the right manual and supported connection.
- Check that model’s manual and Samsung’s model-specific guidance. Look for explicit RS-232 or EX-Link control documentation and the port’s stated function. A connector marked service-only cannot be assumed to accept RS-232 control commands.
- Confirm the documented connection and requirements. Samsung’s Consumer RS232 Control Worksheet describes several arrangements: a native 3.5 mm EX-Link connection on some TVs, a proprietary Samsung USB dongle on others, and models that are unsupported. Do not infer compatibility from a connector’s appearance.
- Check whether installation settings are required. Some USB-based configurations or models require settings to be enabled. Samsung advises that service-menu changes be handled by a professional installer; follow current instructions for the exact model rather than applying another TV’s procedure.
Samsung’s worksheet says, “Most Samsung Consumer TVs can be controlled via RS232,” but it also notes unsupported models and different connection methods. “Most” is a qualitative statement, not a guarantee that a particular television supports control.

Samsung’s Anynet+ support page explains the HDMI-CEC feature. If you need serial control, use the connection and command information documented for your specific TV.

When to use an installer
Samsung characterizes RS-232 installations as specialized and advises professional installers for service-menu changes. Its guidance also says Samsung does not provide phone support for these specialized installations. If the manual does not clearly establish compatibility, or the setup requires an undocumented setting or connector, ask Samsung support or a qualified AV installer to confirm the requirements before connecting equipment.
