Singapore’s best-known RFID example is its legacy Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system: roadside gantries use radio-frequency identification to charge vehicles that pass beneath them during operating hours. That arrangement is being replaced. ERP 2 uses a satellite-based GNSS system and onboard units (OBUs), not RFID. Logistics and supply-chain tracking are other RFID applications identified by Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), but available sources do not provide a current count of RFID deployments across the country.

What RFID is used for in Singapore

RFID means Radio Frequency Identification. In Singapore, the clearest public example is the gantry-based ERP 1 road-pricing system. RFID also has applications in logistics and supply-chain tracking and monitoring, according to IMDA’s RFID overview. That identifies relevant uses, not a census of active Singapore deployments across industries.

An RFID tag combines a chip, an antenna and packaging. The chip stores information about an object and transfers it wirelessly to a reader; the antenna enables transmission to and from the reader, while the packaging protects the components. IMDA’s overview describes RFID frequency bands ranging from 125 kHz to 5.8 GHz. Tags and readers using different bands or standards are not automatically interchangeable.

Does Singapore ERP use RFID?

ERP 1 uses RFID at gantries. The Ministry of Transport (MOT) says: “They use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to automatically collect a fee from any vehicle passing under them during their operating hours.” The MOT ERP overview says the system was installed in 1998. In this setup, the charge is associated with a vehicle passing a physical gantry while it is operating.

Tqsbeyah RFID Reader Writer Handheld 125KHz RFID Writer Copier
  • What You Get: The package includes 1pcs 125KHz handheld RFlD writer, 5pcs writable keyfob and 5pcs writable cards. (Notice: using the RFID reader needs two 1.5V AAA batteries and the batteries are not included in the package)
  • RFID Reader Writer: The card and in the combination are the default empty command products. To test read/write functions, first copy data from free labels using a replicator, then write it into cards/keychains before replacing the use of
  • Portable RFID Reader: The rfid copier is designed small size and light weight, it is convenient for flow of work, no need to connect to a computer, on-site copy. Copiers can write multiple types of cards, including T5577, EM4205/4305, EL8265/8268, SIC7888
  • Purchase Notice: If your product is EM4100, EM4305, or TK4100 with the same frequency but different cards, please confirm the card before buying. The machine can copy parking cards, access cards, switches cards, including small button-type, shaped cards
  • Proximity cards are reusable. Default blank chips require writing by first reading your 125kHz device's instructions before transferring to key chains/cards. Note: This smart product requires pre-writing low-frequency data from your original device; unusable directly. Replicator enables multi-use cloning of single-copy cards. ERP 1 and ERP 2: what changes?

Feature ERP 1 ERP 2
Location technology RFID at roadside gantries GNSS-based onboard unit (OBU), not RFID
How a charging point is identified The vehicle passes beneath a physical gantry The OBU detects a charging location and calculates the applicable charge
Infrastructure Gantry-based charging Satellite-based system; LTA notes that some roadside units may support connectivity
Scheduled transition Gantry charging ends 31 December 2026 Begins 1 January 2027

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) update of 28 September 2026 sets out those transition dates and reports that more than 98% of eligible Singapore-registered vehicles had an OBU installed by that date. This is a dated rollout figure, not a permanent feature of the system.

Is ERP 2.0 RFID or GPS?

ERP 2 is GNSS-based, not an RFID system. GNSS refers to satellite navigation systems; the OBU detects a charging location and calculates the applicable charge. LTA describes ERP 2 as a satellite-based system and notes that some roadside units may help support connectivity. Calling the system “GPS-based” is less precise than GNSS: the official description uses GNSS.

  • Smart Card Reader: This rfid copier can read many types of cards, including T5577, S50, S70, TK4100, EM4100, EM4200, TK4100-D, TK4168, HID ProxCard II, AWID, Paradox and other common cards on the market. If you aren't sure your card whether can be used or the device can not read your card, please contact us
  • App connection: You can use the App to operate or decode through a computer or mobile phone, and upgrade the App for free(Notice: when the computer identifies it as malware, you should exit the computer's protection software)
  • NFC Simulation: Independent NFC simulation function, allowing devices with NFC function to simulate encrypted IC cards with one button. Also, You can directly enter the card number to be written by key, which is convenient and fast
  • Communication Interface: The card reader is with low power consumption in standby mode and supports Type-C comm, making it convenient and practical. And the rfid copier is with 2.8-inch TFT color screen, which can display various card information more intuitively

What to check when choosing an RFID reader and tag

A general RFID reader-and-tag kit can help someone learn the technology or build a prototype. It is not a way to read, replace or communicate with ERP equipment; ERP 2 uses GNSS-based OBUs, and RFID products are not universally compatible with one another.

  • Frequency and standard: Confirm that reader and tags use compatible bands and standards. IMDA’s broad frequency range of 125 kHz to 5.8 GHz describes the technology overall, not a single interoperable system.
  • Tag type and power: Match the tag to the reader and to the intended use.
  • Read range and environment: Check the required distance and the conditions in which the tags and reader will operate.
  • Reader interface: Verify that the reader can connect to the computer or other equipment in the project.
  • Software and integration: Check that the reader’s software and data format work with the application you plan to use.

What LTA says about ERP 2 data

LTA says vehicle-specific data is used for payment, charges and enforcement. Data used for traffic management and transport planning is aggregated or anonymised, with safeguards intended to protect information from unauthorised access and limit applications’ access to OBU information. These are LTA’s stated policies and safeguards; they are not an independent security audit. See LTA’s ERP 2.0 FAQs.
