Reseller web hosting is a hosting service model in which you buy hosting resources from a provider and allocate them to customers as separate hosting accounts. You manage the customer-facing hosting relationship; the provider supplies the underlying hosting resources. In cPanel’s model, resellers use limited WebHost Manager (WHM) access to manage customer cPanel accounts, with permissions set by the provider.

How reseller web hosting works

  1. You sign up with a hosting provider for reseller hosting or a pool of hosting resources.
  2. The provider grants the permissions included with your arrangement. In cPanel’s implementation, this can include limited WHM access.
  3. You create separate customer cPanel accounts and allocate resources within the limits the provider sets.
  4. You manage the hosting relationship with your customers. The provider remains responsible for supplying the underlying hosting resources.

cPanel defines the model as: “A reseller purchases system resources from a hosting provider, and then allocates the resources to the cPanel accounts that they sell.” cPanel’s Guide to Reseller Accounts describes how this works in its system; it is not a universal specification for every hosting platform or provider.

How a reseller account differs from hosting several domains

A regular cPanel account can manage multiple domains. A reseller account is intended for managing separate cPanel accounts and includes limited WHM access. That separation can suit an agency or business that wants distinct accounts for different clients, but whether it is the right setup depends on the provider’s configuration and the business’s needs. cPanel’s account documentation explains the distinction.

What resellers can control

Reseller permissions are set by the hosting provider, so the label alone does not guarantee access to every WHM feature. Depending on the configuration, a reseller may be able to create packages that set limits such as disk quota and bandwidth, then assign those packages to customer accounts. The provider can also restrict account creation and package-management permissions. cPanel’s reseller guide documents this provider-controlled model.

White-labeling is plan-dependent

Some providers offer white-label or branded reseller hosting, allowing customer-facing account pages or related details to carry the reseller’s branding. This is an available feature, not an automatic part of every reseller arrangement. Check the specific plan for branding options and whether it permits custom nameservers. cPanel’s branding guidance describes ways to customize client-facing account pages, while providers’ advertised features should be verified in their current plan terms.

What to check before choosing a reseller plan

Reseller plans are not defined by one standard set of account counts, permissions, or support terms. Compare providers using the details that affect how you will serve customers:

  • Customer account capacity: the number of separate accounts allowed and any account-creation restrictions.
  • Resource limits: disk space, bandwidth, and the rules for allocating them among customers.
  • Management permissions: whether you can create or edit packages and which WHM functions are available.
  • Branding and nameservers: whether white-label pages or custom nameservers are included.
  • Support and migrations: which issues the provider handles and what migration assistance is offered.
  • Backups and security: what protections are included and what tasks remain your responsibility.
  • Billing and client management: whether tools are included or must be arranged separately. Client-billing software such as WHMCS is a separate software category, not a guaranteed feature of reseller hosting.
  • Renewal terms and overages: recurring prices, resource limits, and charges for exceeding them.

Provider pages illustrate that packages, branding, and billing tools can vary, but they do not establish one set of standard inclusions. Read the current terms for the offer you are considering.

Important limitation: nested resellers

Do not assume a reseller account can safely create another reseller tier. cPanel says nested reseller configurations are unsupported and untested, and strongly recommends against configuring a server this way. See cPanel’s guidance on nested reseller configurations.
