Repetitive brain injury means repeated exposure to impacts or forces that affect the brain. It can include diagnosed concussions as well as impacts that do not cause recognized concussion symptoms. The phrase describes a pattern of exposure, not a diagnosis: chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a disease associated with repetitive brain trauma, not another name for every history of repeated impacts.
What does “repetitive brain injury” mean?
It is a plain-language umbrella term for repeated head or body impacts that affect the brain. Because some relevant impacts may not produce recognizable concussion symptoms, a count of diagnosed concussions does not necessarily capture every exposure discussed in research. The term itself does not establish that a person has a particular disease or lasting brain damage.
Research discusses repeated impacts in contact and collision sports, military service and blast exposure, and other circumstances. Proposed research criteria have also considered impacts transmitted from the body to the head and contexts such as domestic abuse, head banging, and some vocational activities. These are exposure examples, not proof that any one circumstance inevitably leads to CTE.

These terms refer to different things: an exposure pattern, a symptomatic injury, a clinical research concept, and a disease confirmed by examining brain tissue.

- IMPACT REDUCTION | The Guardian Cap Football Helmet Cover is a padded, soft-shell layer that is worn on the outside of your hard-shell helmet to reduce impact of daily hits. Also pads blows to knees, abdomen and other body parts during inside run and position drills. DOES NOT INCLUDE HELMET & VISOR
- ONE SIZE FITS ALL | These padded covers will fit all youth & adult football and lacrosse helmets. Guardian Caps Helmet Covers are used by youth, high school, college, and Pro teams to reduce the impact of blows during practice and games. The Cap does not affect the integrity of the helmet and is easy on and off, attaching to itself.
- INSULATING COMFORT | The soft padding of the cap also reduces radiant heat up to 20° F, keeping players cooler during hot practices. This insulation also dampens sound waves and vibrations, removing the loud "crack" of the helmet during impact.
- SMART DESIGN | Guardian Caps are made to slide off of each other. The fabric has a lower coefficient of friction than the polycarbonate helmet shells and does not grip when hit. The helmet pads are designed to move independently, shifting at impact to redirect energy. They also reduce wear and tear and preserve the paint and decals of the helmets, so they always look great on game days!
- DISCLAIMER WARNING | No helmet, headgear, or chinstrap can prevent concussions or serious head injuries. Researchers disagree on how impact test results relate to injuries. No conclusions should be drawn about risk reduction from these tests. All headgear and chinstraps must be used with properly fitted, maintained helmets.
| Term | What it means | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Repetitive brain injury or trauma | Repeated exposures to impacts or forces that affect the brain. | An exposure description, not a standalone diagnosis. |
| Concussion | A symptomatic mild traumatic brain injury. | Repeated exposure may include impacts that do not cause a clinical presentation consistent with concussion. |
| Subconcussive impact | An impact without a clinical presentation consistent with concussion; research criteria describe it as potentially similar to or less forceful than an impact causing symptomatic concussion. | The label does not mean each such impact is independently proven to cause lasting damage. |
| Traumatic encephalopathy syndrome (TES) | A proposed clinical research construct involving symptoms and exposure history associated with possible CTE. | Proposed TES criteria are not a definitive diagnostic test and TES is not confirmed CTE. |
| Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) | A neurodegenerative disease linked to repetitive brain trauma, with characteristic abnormal phosphorylated tau pathology. | Definitive confirmation currently requires neuropathologic examination after death. |
Can repeated concussions cause CTE?
CTE is associated with repetitive brain trauma, which can include concussions and impacts without recognized concussion symptoms. The precise relationship between repeated exposure and disease risk is not fully established. Not everyone exposed to repeated impacts develops CTE, and current evidence does not support a settled individual risk estimate.
The U.S. National Library of Medicine’s MeSH entry describes CTE as a “Degenerative brain disease linked to repetitive brain trauma.” That wording captures the association without making repetitive brain injury and CTE interchangeable.

What symptoms are associated with CTE?
Symptoms discussed in relation to CTE can include changes in memory and cognition, mood, or behavior. MeSH lists possible progressive symptoms including memory loss, aggression, and depression. These symptoms are not specific proof of CTE and cannot establish the disease on their own.

How is CTE diagnosed?
The cited reviews describe examination of brain tissue after death as the current definitive way to diagnose CTE. Research into identifying CTE during life continues, but symptoms, routine scans, checklists, or consumer tests should not be presented as confirming it.

How common is CTE after repeated impacts?
The exact incidence and prevalence of CTE remain unknown, and the relationship between repetitive exposure and disease risk still has important uncertainties. A proportion found in a selected brain-bank sample would not establish prevalence in the general population. There is no established population figure or numeric individual risk estimate to apply to everyone with repeated head impacts.
