Real user monitoring (RUM) measures how an application performs for people using it in real conditions. For a website, browser-side instrumentation can report performance timings, interactions, errors, and related context so teams can investigate experiences across the devices, browsers, networks, and locations their users actually have.

What is real user monitoring?

RUM is the collection and analysis of application performance and interaction data from actual users’ browsers or devices. A web RUM setup typically adds client-side instrumentation that records selected signals and sends them for analysis. Unlike a test run in a controlled environment, its measurements reflect real usage conditions.

As MDN Web Docs defines it, “Real User Monitoring (RUM) measures the performance of a page from real users’ machines.” The precise data available depends on the instrumentation and how it is configured.

What does RUM measure?

Browser RUM can collect timing, rendering, interaction, request, and error signals. It may also organize activity by page or view, session, or other dimensions. The set of metrics and the level of detail vary by tool.

  • Page and navigation timing: Measures such as Time to First Byte, domInteractive, and domComplete help describe when a page or parts of its loading process become available.
  • Resource and rendering performance: Browser timing APIs can report resource loads and paint events. Some implementations also collect user-defined timings.
  • Interaction experience: Metrics such as Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and Interaction to Next Paint (INP) describe aspects of how quickly users see content and how responsive an interface feels. Metric support and reporting depend on the selected implementation.
  • Requests and errors: Network request details and client-side errors can help connect a slow or broken experience to a particular page or operation.
  • Sessions and user journeys: Some systems group activity into sessions, traces, or interactions to help diagnose a sequence of events. These data models are product-specific, not universal requirements of RUM.

For example, Elastic’s documentation describes browser timing measures and Core Web Vitals in its RUM documentation and User Experience documentation. Its documented agent began collecting INP in version 5.16.0, and Kibana 8.12 replaced First Input Delay (FID) with INP in the User Experience app. Those version details apply to Elastic’s implementation; support should be checked for the specific tool in use.

How is RUM different from synthetic monitoring?

RUM observes actual user activity; synthetic monitoring runs scripted checks in a controlled environment. The two approaches answer different questions and are most useful together.

Approach What it tells you Where it is useful
Real user monitoring How an application behaved for actual users, including variation in devices, browsers, networks, and locations. Understanding field experience and longer-term performance trends.
Synthetic monitoring How a defined, scripted journey performs under chosen conditions, such as a particular browser, device, network, geography, or cache state. Repeatable checks, regression testing, and spotting short-term problems during development.

As MDN explains in its comparison of RUM and synthetic monitoring, synthetic checks make controlled, repeatable scenarios possible, while RUM shows what happens in actual use. A successful synthetic test does not guarantee that every user has a smooth experience, and RUM alone does not provide the same repeatability as a scripted check.

What should teams consider before deploying RUM?

RUM instrumentation can collect information such as URLs, interaction events, session identifiers, and approximate location, depending on the tool and configuration. Teams should understand what leaves the browser and how it is handled before enabling collection.

  • Review the fields and events collected, and exclude or mask sensitive values where appropriate.
  • Decide whether identifiers are needed, how they are assigned, and how long related data is retained.
  • Check what location information is derived and whether network addresses or other potentially sensitive data are transmitted.
  • Confirm that collection and retention practices meet the organization’s privacy requirements.

These details are implementation-specific. For example, Splunk’s browser data model documentation, updated April 24, 2026, says its browser agent uses beacon-connection IP addresses to derive geography such as country or city and drops those addresses within six hours. It also says identity data is not collected by default in that implementation, though manual instrumentation can map traces to identifiers. These statements should not be assumed to describe other RUM products.

What does OpenTelemetry have to do with RUM?

OpenTelemetry (OTel) is a vendor-neutral, open-source framework for instrumenting, generating, collecting, and exporting telemetry such as traces, metrics, and logs. It is relevant when teams want a common telemetry framework across parts of an application, but it does not mean every RUM service supports the same browser data, conventions, or export options.

The OpenTelemetry documentation, last modified August 29, 2025, reported support from more than 90 observability vendors. That is a dated count from the project documentation, not a current total or a measure of identical RUM capabilities.
